Our Beneteau 411 has a 44A FOUR engine with JS model BW7 transmission. We just had it out for repair. When picking it up the transmission mechanic told us to use ATF and to put it in reverse when sailing. He said leaving it in neutral would create unnecessary wear. The Westerbeke manual that came with the boat states we should use SAE 20W/20 or SAE 30 exclusively? Can anyone clarify? Thanks
Pete

Beneteau Oceanis 361 Clipper --
Use SAE 20W/20 for the engine or the reverse gear? Check carefully.
My Volvo Penta manual mentions using 10W-30 for the engine and ATFIII for the reverse gear.
Also it mentions to put in reverse only if it is a folding propeller, otherwise (for fixed) let it to neutral.
Check the manual very carefully or ask the manufacturer. Not what your mechanic says, unless he follows the exact manufacturer's instructions.

Thanks for the reply. My issue is with the transmission only; not the engine. I intend to call Westerbeke directly since I can't find any online reference to JS, the manufacturer of transmission. According to the mechanic leaving the transmission in neutral while sailing will lead to unnecessary wear. I certainly need to clarify this one way or the other.
