Jorge:

Why don't you post a close-up picture of your winches? Someone might have an idea for appearance improvement.

For example, before adding my new self-tailing winches, the primaries were 1980 original equipment. Barient 25's. The had an anodized aluminum coating in a metallic bronze. There were oxidized spots all over. I used some pre aluminum primer wash on them. They now look very good. But an old non self tailing winch doesn't have much resale appeal any more.

My winches are not the original ones that came from the boat: the originals were taken from the salvage yard, from the same boat; I have those on top, next to the sliding hatch
The ones I have at the back have a bluish rubber thing, I call them poor man's self tailing winches.
I dismantled them in the early days and serviced them, with marine greese, and they look great on the inside, but the outside looks a bit ugly.
I like yours very much, hence my request about the paint you used.
I was there today, but only just saw your message
I will post pictures when I go there again
Again, yours look great, and it will not break the bank!

Hi Jorge:

The blue things are called "winchers" which have been a topic on the forums, but not for a while. Here's a link to a thread:
http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=109744&highlight=winchers
Most interesting thread on those winchers
I read all of them
I have used them on my boat, and found them very useful: no-one has claimed them to be ST, but they serve their purpose
Some of the comments appear to be seasoned sailors, I suspect some have never even left their slip at the marina:
So I am quite happy with them, as I do not intend following on the footsteps of my countrymen: Vasco da Gama, Fernao de Magalhaes or Pedro Alvares Cabral.
How about a little history in between comments?
Thank you Rardi, most helpful you are, I have learned a new word: Winchers
Still will post photos, but need to paint them soon

I love Winchers!!!!
I had them on the primaries on my H33. For self tailing, follow Fatty Goodlander's advice - throw the tail overboard and let the boatspeed do the tailing.
I put one on the mainsheet winch on my H37C. I dislike cleating any sheet (vestigial of my wasted youth racing performance dinghies?). You may want to release it in a hurry. Two wraps and I am almost self tailing. Once set, the sheet goes into the jaws. Instant release possible. Much faster than untying from a cleat.
