"joint" between exhaust elbow pieces

Ok, the exhaust elbow is clamped down in the table vice with the joint still threaded into it. Been soaking it w/PB Blaster. Seem to remember the joint is reverse threaded...(?) Any and all advice on getting the joint out will be appreciated, I'd really like to be able to reuse this part. The mixing elbow was cracked and the side of the joint attached to it was corroded through.

Put a torch on it and heat it to nearly a red heat and put your pipe wrench on and pull.

Pray over it. If it is aluminum you will be hard pressed to "get it red." Aluminum will look just fine in room light right up to the point where it melts. You HAVE to have the lights down low to see aluminum glow red.

If it's aluminum you will be hard pressed to get it apart by any means. The torch only works on iron and steel. The other method that will work but will make you work very hard, is to cut the male section about a quarter inch from the female section and with a hacksaw blade cut through the inner piece until you touch the threads, cut in two places about a half inch apart. Then take a cold chisel and hammer and break out the narrow section that you cut. After that you can collapse the remainder and work it out

I don't know too many people that have a torch that will get it red but adding heat to it will help for sure with one of those little hand propane torch and the newer one's can really get it very hot to help get it off with a big long plumbers wrench and add a long pipe on the end of the handle works good and lots of muscle power .

Be sure your bench vise can take the strain.

I don't think you need to get it red hot. When we did this we used to LARGE pipe wrenches with breaker bars. We then heated either the manifold or the elbow. I think the key is have large enough breaker bars on the pipe wrenches. I think you will find that you can get better leverage on the wrenches if they are on the ground too. Obviously you will need a couple of people to make this all work.

When you put things back together be sure to use never-seize on all of the threaded fittings.

One of the ends of that connection is LEFT HANDED.. I dunnot remember which end. Lay the ell and coupling on a table so you are looking into the hole in the coupling.. Look at the threads.. if the tops of the threads are further away (slanted away from you from left to right) on the right., that is a right hand thread and the other end is left.. if left threads are closer, it is a left thread and the other end is right. Good luck!..

Just went thru all that and decided that all new was the best way. Look at how nice that nice new mixing elbow and joint and think how great it would be to have all new!

I had to replace the exhaust in a C-30 I used to have. Soaking in Liquid Wrench for a week, with a re-apply every day, did it.

Mixing elbow, joint, and gasket will be all new, just trying to re-use the exhaust elbow that attaches to engine, which is fine vs $140 for new one. Thanks kloudie1 for the tip on how to determine whether right or left handed thread...wanted to make sure I was wrenching the right direction!

A six-foot long pipe will provide the needed leverage. I watched as my Yanmar guy did this, and it was like opening a pickle jar. It turns out that high school physics class had some use after all.

give it up and buy the pieces. Not worth the labor and in the end you will end up buying them anyway. This was the lesson I learned the hard way on my '79 Hunter 30' YSM12
