Last week, a friend showed me a neat trick - to join two lines, he melted the two ends over a heating source and joined the 2 ends while they were still hot. Anyways - it worked. I recognize that this is permanent - but if that's the intention I'm wondering if anyone has opinions on this - what's the breaking strength? I just did this again and am trying to rip the test lines apart with no luck. Thanx,

Don't trust it with your life!!

Tie the rope to a tree and to your car and pull you can't break 1/2 inch polyester line with a car. But I'll bet a 2 dollar dog that the line will break if you put a real load on it.

I sure hope for your sake you

are not going to be betting your life on this rope. Like make it a halyard and then go aloft on it or worse somebody else goes aloft on it. The industry standard is to use a splice. Your firends method is faster however. I'd bet a $3 dog that it breaks the first time it goes through a block under load.

purpose for the rope

guys - to make a long story short, my leach line disentegrated and I dont have a lot of space between the fold in the sail to make a knot which is why i was considering doing this. This solution is by no means meant to be used on any sheets or halyards.

Refeed the line

Just use you existing line to pull a new line. Don't be so foolish. What else is jerry riged on your boat???? Retire and sell the boat if you cannot do it the correct way.

Ok Rick, so you are trying to say is

no one should be sailing if they "McGuivered" a solution to something on a boat. Thats ridiculous and worst than that its pompous. Its a leech line for christmas sake ! Heck I still hear stories about world cruisers relying on Duct Tape often
