Hey folks, I'm going to be selling my MacGregor 26S and possibly buying an '89 33.5 if the survey checks out. What should I be wary of? What are the typical problems with these? It's a saltwater boat which makes me anxious. It will be coming to a freshwater lake. No trailer but I would need to have it moved several hundred miles, VA to KS. Is this a practical choice for me? It's a georgeous boat and it sounds very well maintained talking to the private seller.
Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like ya have a keeper that you are lusting after!.. Get a good survey.. Get quotes from a couple of movers to see if moving it is not a deal breaker..
Only a couple of specific things that come to mind.. make sure there is a good barrier coat (not just bottom paint) on the hull and there are no big blisters..If no coat, make arrangements to do that before it goes into fresh water. I have heard of salt water boats being moved to fresh that have developed a bunch of blisters. Have the exhaust elbow checked for plugging. That can be done with a mirror and light after the exhaust hose is removed. Make sure the survey addresses the standing rigging.
Read the specific model reviews on this site .. Click on "Owner Resources" then "boat information by model" then "33.5" Looks like over 50 reviews.
ENJOY!

Well we decided to find a freshwater boat and closer to home. Made a deal on a 1991 30T. It's in beautiful shape. The owners took great care of it. Having the inset windows resealed before we bring it home. Transportation is a huge deal even with the trailer. The 50' mast is a big headache.

If you think thats a big deal try shipping a Hunter 326 from California to Dubai.........Even on a low loader it needed a police escort through the state of California coz was still too high.

Happy sailing on your new boat.

You win! I can't even imagine a move like that. I'm coming from a MacGregor 26 trailer sailer. The Hunter is a huge step up for us. Thanks for the good wishes.

Good choice. I had a 91 30T in Missouri and loved it. Also good to get a fresh water boat. I am now in Florida with the salt water and we get use to it but you have a much newer boat from fresh water.

I made a lot of mods to my 30T like installing A/C, electric head, ..... Let me know if I can help.
