I have a 2001 Johnson sailmaster 8hp and need to know the basic running of the engine. There is a small button on the steering/throttle arm, what does it do. There is a tab lever under the engine attached to verticle pivot area of the motor and has a picture of a boat and motor on one side and nothing on the other. WHat about the setting on the end of the throttle?

Does anyone have the operation manual that could be emailed, or where I can find it? Thanks everyone!

The button on the end of the throttle is likely the kill switch. If there is a ring cut in it, it is to hold out the deadman switch (must be there to hold the button out or it won't start). What year is it? The lever is either to tilt or lock the engine.

Yes that button is the kill switch. You just press it down for a few seconds. Mine doesn't have any kind of safety lanyard/switch. It is a very simple and dependable motor. I find it starts best by letting the fuel run out on its own instead of leaving gas in the float bowl. Also, I find that it starts easier with the throttle down low and the choke out (even in warm weather). The tilt lock wasn't working and was driving me crazy. Every time I put it into reverse, the propeller would screw itself out of the water! This went on for a few weeks until I saw the same motor on another boat. Aha! I found out that there is a 6" or so inch rod that goes through it and lets the lock mechanism work. If you are having this problem, let me know and I will send a photo - it impossible to explain it in words. I would also be careful about shifting into gear without the engine at the slowest idle. I broke a shear pin this way! Sorry I don't have a manual either, but the motor is very simple. I am not very good with engines, so I have it winterized, checked and 'tuned up' by a shop once a year and it runs great.

The button on the end of the throttle is likely an adjustment nut to change the tension of the throttles' rotation.

I have a 1993 yacht twin by OMC same mfg. it probably has the same controls. mine has a red button on the side of the tiller, it is the dead man switch but has been disabled.
the lever is to lock down the motor so it does not tilt up while reversing.
the screw knob on the end of the throttle is to adjust the idle speed.
yours may be the same.

Ahoy islandjim,
As has been said, the button on the end of the throttle is defiantly the stop button and uses a clip and lanyard assembly that can be found at your local "Wally Store", Wal-Mart, in the boating/sporting goods area. Or you could defeat its purpose and wire it open. The tab lever is the Tilt/Run Lever and according to the manual, the picture of the boat and motor (the run position) should be showing when starting the motor. As for the third part of your question, " WHat about the setting on the end of the throttle?", I'm not sure what you're talking about. The operator's manual is 16 pages and you can view them here, http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/album.php?albumid=745 , I'll add the 12 page owner's handbook when I find time to scan it. If you prefer the "unshrunken version" of the pages, let me know and I'll email them to you in a 7mb pdf.

Thats what I needed!

Now that's what I'm talking about! BenDi
That is what I needed. It is a little older version than my 2001, but the basics will be very close. Thank you. I have always been able to count on getting good responses and great ideas from this SailboatOwners forum. Thanks to everyone.

Where did you get your manuals? Are they originals? I hear there weren't many changes in this outboard over the years. What year is yours. Do you know anybody who has spun the spline (actually more of a notch) on their drive shaft on one of these?

Hoping to hear back.

Hi Rich,
The manuals that I posted are the originals that came with a 1984 model year.
