Sadly, I received the news today through a friend/neighbor of Joe's who works at the same company as I do........

We will definitely all miss our friend Joe.........

Joseph Alves, Jr.November 30, 2013

TAUNTON – Joseph Alves, Jr., husband of Dolores (Moniz) Alves, died at his Taunton home on Nov. 30, 2013.
He was born 70 years ago on Thanksgiving Day.
A lifelong Taunton resident, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Lucille (Baptiste) Alves, Sr.
After attending Taunton schools, he was employed as a lineman by the Mansfield Electric Light Department, where he worked for thirty years, retiring in January 2000.
A communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Church, Joe loved sailing, and was a member of the Shawmut Yacht Club.
He also enjoyed playing the guitar, and communicating with his friends on the computer.
In addition to his wife of Taunton, he leaves three sons, Steven Alves and his wife Debby of Taunton, Michael Alves of Taunton, and Timothy Alves and his wife Mindy of New Bedford; his mother-in-law, Maria Moniz of Taunton; six grandchildren, Steven, Jr., Kevin, Jessica, Christina, Timothy, Jr. and Bryan; a niece, Debra; a nephew, Robert; and his faithful dog, Penny, who was always by his side.
Joe was also the brother of the late Robert Alves.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Friday, Dec. 6th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Jude the Apostle Church at 11a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend. The family will be receiving visitors at the funeral home on Friday, between the hours of 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral mass. www.silvafuneralhome.com.

I hope he's sailing on his beloved Trinkka in the afterlife, with all his mods and with his blue tarps flying, his kayak trailing behind, a freshly fried sea dinner on his folding table and a dog at his side. Even God will be impressed with his ingenuity, kindness and humanity. Never has there been a better friend to ODay boats than he.

Good Speed, brother Joe.

Well said Indysailor, I am deeply saddened by his passing.....

Joe was a huge asset to the Oday community he'll be missed ......prayers to him and his family

Be darned the cold. A winters sail is in order. He is missed.

Learned a lot from Joe the past two years as I started sailing. Wished I had "known" him longer.
Sympathies to his family and friends.

I've just been reading his posts here for 2 months, but have learned so much from him. Not only with regards to his modifications, but in terms of his great spirit, tenacity, and love for his passion of sailing and boats. His great human spirit shone through his writings and postings here. He will be sorely missed, but always highly regarded on these message boards. All the best to his family.

Joe " Trinkka" was a valued member here since 2008 and has over 4,000 posts.

He was always there to offer advise and tips on modifications. Even his User Profile is full of information as well as the numerous pictures in his albums.

He recently lost his battle with cancer.

RIP Joe, and thank you for really being "the face" of the O'Day forums. Joe was always there with very helpful advice, always encouraged "newbies", and answered any question, regardless of how trivial absolute respect. My only reget for myself, is that I was never able to me him in person, although the attempt was made. Sadly, I will add his name to the list of names I carry with me when I ride the 192 mile Pan Massachusetts Challenge cancer research fund raiser next August, and he will be in my thoughts as I ride through his home port of Dighton, MA.

Indysailor, what a fantastic tribute to a sailor who's memory will live for eternity. His
contributions were beyond measure, especially to his fellow Oday owners. I only discovered this website and Joe 3 or so years ago, but he was the master of all things Oday, and most especially a person you could count on for knowledge and advice about the importance of sailing in our lives. I'm certain I will think of him often. Pat

May you Rest in Peace Joe.

Many of us came to know you through your online presence, and what a presence it was. You were always among the first to welcome newbies to the site and the first to congratulate anyone who upgraded to a larger or a smaller boat. Your detailed and thoughtful insights helped us to improve our boats and our sailing skills. We loved hearing of your adventures, whether beach combing with your beloved Penny or fishing for that next big striper. We will all miss your humor and your advice. But I'm sure St. Peter was smiling as he welcomed you home.

Fair winds my friend,

Dave

Wow i was actually looking for any new posts by him because he always posts such great info.

i had chatted back and fourth a few times recently since i finally got a vessel of my own. He was always kind and willing to give me advice on anything and everything Oday and sailing in general.

RIP Joe and I only selfishly wish i could have sailed with you being so close and absorbing your vast knowledge.

It was said Joe has been here since 2008, just wanted to add his join date did not update when the board changed to the new software. I know we have been talking O'Days and about fishing and the best recipes for different fish for the last ten years on SBO.

I never met Joe in real life, but I feel I have lost a friend non the less.

RIP friend.

Oh no....
I'm truly going to miss his kind encouraging words and genuine eagerness to help. What a rare gem he was. His knowledge, experience and good ol' common sense made him a gold mine of good advice. We have lost someone that cannot be replaced Although we never met in person I feel as much affection for him as if we had been lifelong friends. He was that kind of fellow. Such a loss.
For those not familier with joe, do yourself a favor and browse his albums and his post. What a great guy.
I miss you Joe, fair winds my friend.

When he quit answering my emails I had a bad feeling.
What a loss, just a super nice guy not to mention a walking encyclopedia of boat info and would gladly sit down and hammer out a two page email answering any questions I had. I'm sure he is missed by many.
thanks

Oh man, I just saw Joe's cherished 222 "trinka" on craigslist... My first instinct was to reach out and say hello... which I did before even reading the ad...

I'm very saddened by the news of Joe's passing. I was out sailing on the Taunton River in my New-to-Me O'day 22. Joe and another boat were anchoring for the night. Joe jumped right up at the sight of another O'day and began snapping pictures. I sailed in circles around them and we chatted back and fourth a bit and Joe said I should find him here and he'd send me the photos. I did! He was a huge help to be and even bigger inspiration! I was a new sailor and he had all sorts of advice for me over the next 5 or so years while I owned the O'day...

I'm very saddened... The world is a lesser place without him...
