Doug,
Thank you for your thoughtful and professional reply in #8.
I couldn't disagree with you more.
What I have seen on this and many other forums are questions that could and actually SHOULD be answered by Google. In fact, I had considered starting a topic about just this subject, so I'll just do it here.
Why do people ask questions? 'Cuz they want answers. IN MANY (certainly not all) cases, the answer would be BETTER obtained through an internet search engine, IN ADDITION to asking here, and in many cases actually instead of asking.
It bears no resemblance to RTFM (Bruce - F is for funny!

), since in many cases the question is "Where do I find the manual?" in the first place. That can get boat-specific and be a particularly pertinent question for a forum like this. But many Class Associations already have the manuals right on their association websites.
And it's not an issue of "Search this site" as an (unacceptable) answer either, 'cuz that's plain rude without offering any other help. As you know I provide links to other information that I know is out there in many of my replies. That is a separate issue.
Suggesting the use of Google is much different.
It reflects a lack of the questioner doing his or her own homework and research for STUFF THAT IS NOT BOAT-SPECIFIC.
I have been having this very "conversation" with other "boat forum regulars" over the past year or so. One of them mentioned just this to me just today:
"They expect to be spoon fed EVERYTHING instead of looking ANYthing up! My favorites are the ones who post "does anyone know of a source for (insert well known brand name equipment here)?" Just for fun, I Google it and come up with two or more PAGES of sources. When I reply, "please try Google," I'm attacked by 6 people for being "mean" to 'em."
I think most of us have been circumspect in suggesting the use of an internet search engine ("Google" - although I use DuckDuckGo) in addition to answering the question. But as the above quote points out, sometimes it does get so basic one wonders about the ability of the questioner to perform even the simplest task on their computer. It is also no reflection of what the heck they do on their boats, since not everyone is as computer savvy, for example, as they are with their boats.
But in this day & age, when the term "Google" has become a noun and a verb and all other parts of grammar definitions that I forgot when I left high school (!!!

!!!) it is almost unconscionable. It, like wikipedia (love it or leave it), has actually become a BASIC source of information for the entire world. And it works on every single communications device in use today: desktop, laptop, tablets, phones --- you name it.
I believe that it is unreasonable and even unfair to take any issue with someone who honestly suggests: "Have you tried Google?" or "Please, do a Google search."
Why? Because if one thinks of it for a moment, it's just like the quote above, and in addition to the links provided and written answers to questions, it points the OP to ANOTHER SOURCE of information, which may and usually almost always DOES have VASTLY more input for the OP.
It has a further advantage. This is a widely read boating forum, and one of the best. But it covers a small number of actual people. You know the "regulars" here already, right? I've actually responded to some impatient OP’s questions by suggesting that folks who have the answer may be out sailing, or not reading this particular topic even though we know they’re out there, or that the OP should post the non-boat-specific question in Ask All Sailors, rather than one of the one-design forums. Things like heads and electrical systems have little to do, in most cases, with a specific boat. And in many cases, the Google search will get the answers way faster than this forum may be able to provide.
Finally, a Google search may turn up a One-Design Owners Association. I am regularly amazed that when people find this great forum and resource, they STILL haven’t found, for example, the Catalina 25 or Catalina 34 Associations, which certainly come up on a Google search. On my DuckDuckGo search engine, they are BOTH the FIRST hit.
Thanks for prompting me to share my thoughts on this issue.
And, now, heeeree's Johnny!!!
