Hello,
I am installing jiffy reefing on Newport 28 sloop.
What is the smallest line you would recommend?
Trying not to compromise the shape of the leech of the main in light winds with too heavy of a line when reef is not in.
Only sailing in coastal waters.
Thanks much, ST

Like TSBB2 I also use 3/16 line to tie down reefed sail. I use a single reef system set up to only draw down the top reefing position and that uses 5/16th line. I am still evaluating this single system to determine if I prefer it over seperate fore/aft reef rigging. I redesigned it to incorporate 2 additional pullys instead of grommet pull throughs. I have a tall rig and want to draw it all down if I need to reef. I don't even have ties in the bottom reef grommets. Chief

I found Marlow Super Pre-Stretch runs very well through reefing cringles because it is a very stiff and slippery line. Joe on this board recommended it.
For size of the line, I chose 5/16" since I was running a double line reefing system back to the cockpit and that was the minimum size for the rope clutches.
If you went with 3/16" wouldn't be hard on your hands to pull taught? Maybe your reefing process is different than mine. I lower the main to a certain point, than tension the reefing lines to retain tension on the luff, then leech.

I use 3/8 seems heavy for a 26ft boat but Its easier on the hands. When I put a reef in, takes about 5 minutes.

Thanks All,
I ended up using 5/16 with a single reef system. Feels good in the hands and moves through quickly.

That sounds like excessively heavy rope for a reef line. I wonder does it do ugly things to your leech, make it hook up too easily, and destroy what twist you induce for light wind?
