Jib Trim

I need some advice on car adjustment when trimming the jib. Question, when sailing upwind and the upper portion of the leach is luffing is it best to move the car forward or aft? Same question if the lower portion of the leach is luffing? Thanks, Mike

Top - foward; bottom - back

When turning into the wind, if the top of the foward edge (luff) of the jib luffs first, then move the car forward to tension the leech and "untwist" the top of the sail. If the bottom luffs first, then move the car back to flatten the bottom of the sail.

Rule of thumb

In light winds, put the car forward.In heavy winds, pull the car back.
