Jib Trim Question

This past weekend we encountered wind conditions from 15 to 22 knts with large seas. During the course of the day, the leech of the jib was luffing badly. The fair lead was previously in an aft position. I moved it forward and it seemed to ease the luffing a bit but it was still bad. Background: The UV cover had come undone in spots. I still had this luffing problem and figured it was a result of the UV cover being loose in spots. So, I had the UV cover restitched but it seems to have made no difference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ken

leach lines

Do you have leach lines than run inside of the edge? My C350 has lines that run inside the hem of the leach and the foot that adjust the tension.

Leach line...

Sounds like your leech line is in need of a little tighten. Snug it until the flap just stops while under sail. If that isn't it, maybe your sail isn't trimmed in far enough? Or you were pinching? B

Yep, Leech line

Draw it slowly tighter till the leech flutter stops. Don't forget to release it before you head down or put the sail away.

Moving the fairlead position ...

Moving it forward tightens the leach and loosens the foot, moving it aft loosens the leach and tightens the foot, introducing more twist to the headsail ... needed for higher wind conditions, no? You only want to draw the leach line in enough to reduce the flutter but not so much to "hook" the trailing edge of the sail. I don't worry about a little flutter, but if it is enough to cause you concern, it is time to reduce, isn't it?
