Jib too short for roller furling unit

I recently purchased a C-30 TRBS which included both a 150% Genoa and a working jib. The previous owner said that he never used the jib, but the owner before him had used it on the roller furling unit. The problem, as he described it, is that the jib is too short to for the roller furler, and if you connect it at the tack, the head is too far down the furling unit and wraps the halyard when you roller furl the sail. He said he never bothered figuring this out, but suggested some sort of extension at the tack which would allow the head to raise all the way to the top of the furling unit. I was thinking of a turnbuckle and shackles, or possibly just a length of double-braid. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and would have any suggestions for using this sail so as to allow it to be roller furled. Thanks.

How Short

Kevin, How short is this sail? Could this have been a larger sail cut down? If your 2 feet short you may want to do something with the double braid, and snapshackles. Regards, Chris

No problem. Just make a pennant.

On my c-27 TR, I was constantly being overpowered with the 150%. I had a new 135 made and my sailmaker suggested since I don't race, to cut the luff short. It just barely touches the bow pulpit. I used a 12 inch wire pennant at the tack after using double braid for a while to get the length right. On my Hood RF, I have to get the sail up to the top or I do get halyard wrap. I am very pleased with this system as now I can see under the sail up to 15 degrees of heel. The sail rolls up much better than the 150 and I can carry full sails up to 15 kt of wind.

Thanks a lot Don!!!

It sounds like you've hit my problem right on the head, and that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Pennants

The head pennant will definitely do the trick. Another thought, though: depending on the cut of your genoa, you may want to do some combination of head and tack pennants. A tack pennant is helpful if the foot of the sail is very low to the deck and chafes a lot on the lifelines and/or bow pulpit. A 6- or 8-inch tack pennant can raise it up a tad.

same thing

I had the same prob with my hood(pos) furler and all i do is raise the jib all the way up to prevent wrap of the halyard and i use .25 line to crank down the tack to the d shackle. I havnt had any prob with it on a deck sweeper 150. other that i cant see anything. cole
