My Wife and I have a 2000 260 Hunter My wife has a great deal of problem with the strength in her arms and wrists so pulling on the jib sheets is a lot of work. Has any one ever run the sheets thought block and tackle or pulleys to make this and easier job for her?

Let her have the tiller...

or wheel, then you take care of the sheets. My wife doesn't have a lot of upper body strength either. I take care of raising and trimming sails. She has become a pretty good helmsman.

Spinlock

I, too, have a 2000 H260. I installed spinlocks power cleats where the cam cleats once were. My wife has a harder time than I at sheeting in the jib. With the spinlocks you can lock them down and sheet them in with the wenches. Also, if she gets to pulling quick enough she can get the jib pretty tight on a tack without the wenches. The spinlocks are about $50 each but they make some that bolt right into the holes for the cam cleats. On a side note, I don't know if you have a wheel or a tiller. I have a wheel and found it kind of hard to release the mainsheet when it was attached to the bottom of the cockpit as it is normally designed. By adding a short piece of rope at the end to raise the lower block a bit off the ground I found it to be much easier to release from behind the wheel. Just another little thing I've picked up. The other option, let her steer or let her just be a passenger.

Do you have turning blocks?

I'm not that familiar with the 260 but do the jib sheets go through turning blocks before wrapping on the winches? On my 333 the turning blocks are deck mounted aft of the winches but you could use large snatch blocks for the same purpose.

Slow that jibe/tack down

Kelli trims for us about 1/2 the time and as long as I'm not playing Americas cup challenge, a nice slow jibe/tack will satisfy her on the slack jib sheets. If she's struggling I'm not paying enough attention to how much sail I have up or giving her enough lead time. I too have the spinlocks but would like to have raised them off the cabin roof about an inch so I could whip them open/closed from behind the wheel when I singlehand that next Amer cup jibe;). Have a great season Michael

No Winches?

When pulling on lines you need very little arm strength. A good handgrip and weight shifting will do it. A person may not be able to curl 20 0r 30 pounds but they can pull 100 if they throw their weight into it. Also a couple of wraps around a winch will greatlly reduce the required strength. Routing jib lines through additional blocks and clutches will only increase friction.

soling

If you have the same spinlock model I have, you can probably find a Harken riser that is usally used for thier cam cleats that will raise you up about an inch. Mine will snap open and closed from the wheel so they may be different models.

Spinlock riser

JJJ, I believe Harken does indeed make a riser that would fit these and it's an item near the top of my to-do list while the boat's in the barn for the summer. I could pretty easily fabricate one if I run across the right sized piece of Delron. Thanks for the heads up. Michael

Spinlocks

I agree - you need the wedges. The PX spinlocks I purchased came with a couple of 11 degree wedges. Check their website. http://images.spinlock.co.uk/new_prod/default.asp?page=result&product=cleats&entrynum=12&prodtype=PX You can also purchase the wedges seperately. It's all in the timing. The best technique when tacking is to pull the jibsheet in as much as possible when tacking and then trim out as necessary when the boat comes around. Or you can just head up a little to take pressure off the sheet. This sounds a little more complicated than it really is -- I don't find it a problem. The Powercleat is very strong -- it holds under pressure but will engage or disengage with quick down or up flick of the sheet. By adding enough extra length to the jibsheets you can stand behind the wheel and control the jibsheet with a flick of the wrist.

Make Your Own Risers

When I put them on my boat I cut a piece of teak may have been ipe actually, anyway raising the cleats up makes a big difference. My daughter who was probably seven or eight when I did them like five years ago had no trouble with the sheets. I am pretty sure there are pictures in the photo forum of them.
