Ordering new running rigging and was just curious if I needed jib sheets that are longer than the SBO stores calculated 35 feet suggested length if we are going to have a CDI furler? Short of pulling the boat out of the garage and stepping the mast not sure of anyway to calculate how much line will be used as it wraps around the sail.

Thanks
Sam

They usaually add additional length to the suggested but good question is to ask them direct. Dave Groshong, please supply a a response.

I installed a new Schaefer CF-700 jib furler and ordered 62 ft of New England Rope-Sta-Set - white and flecks 3/8 in (10mm).
Order # NER21STASETWF10 at layline.com
The length was just right to go via Spinlock PXR cam cleats all the way to the helm.

I would verify with the store, but the length of line that wraps should be roughly the length of the jib's foot, plus maybe the circumference of the wrapped sail times 3 or 4 for the extra turns. If you have your jib, measure its foot. The diameter of the wrapped sail is probably something less than a foot, so that is maybe a 2.5 to 3 ft circumference, adding say 10 ft or so. If you think about it, regardless of any furler, each sheet would have to be long enough to have some length for handling and winch winding when it is to windward, which means it has to reach to the mast, and then back around the lee side to the stretched out jib clew. The length of line on the lazy sheet from the mast to the clew when the jib is sheeted in is about equal to the jib foot minus the distance from the mast to the forestay, assuming there was just enough line. Since the standard measurement must account for some slack, that is going to be very close to the line that has to wrap.

I did not think it would take much more line to wrap around it as our sail is pretty small. I will contact the store and see if they have any suggestions. They said the ship out in 3 days so if that is the case I can wait till we pull her out in a couple of weeks to step the mast and rig the furler. I can get an accurate measurement then if it is that critical.
