What a weekend, on the way back to the berth the horses got anxious and pulled the halyard past the winch thru the stops and up the mast, before we got finished we lost it all. After a little coaxing we managed to get the one that weighted the least to ride the bowsun's chair up the mast, unfortunately after an hour we were unable to get the halyard to feed properly over the top block and back down the inside of the mast, in desperation we fed a smaller line down the mast but only managed to get it tangled and finally loose. Any suggestions on how to refeed the halyard?

lost halyard

Get a small "chase line" and tie a piece of chain to it, like a dog choke chain or a piece of bicycle chain. Run it over the sheave and down the mast and try to pick it up at the base using a coat hanger. Then use it to pull the halyard back through. This is in lieu of dropping the stick, which I assume you don't want to do at this time.

Follow Stephens advice and.....

always tie a stopper knot in you lines. This will prevent them from ever going past the thru the stops or stop them at the mast at the least. The bicycle chain is probably the easiest method.
