have a 97 hunter 26 noticed other boats of comparable size have their jib lines from furler run outside their shrouds. Can the 26 do the same or is it engineered to run only inside the shrouds? I was told the other boats are made that way so the jib can be positioned better for runs.

I can see how that would help a little on a run, but how could you trim it to get up wind? You couldn't get it trimmed inside the shrouds which would take a good bit of range out of your jib. I suppose you could rig it like that before you set out on a sail that you knew was going to be all down wind for a leg. (yuck)

Your H26 and the similar H260 rigging is like our H280. The jib sheets (not furler line) are routed inside the shrouds to allow the boat(s) to point. I did experiment once with adding a second set of sheets and ran them through small blocks attached to the chainplates at the gunnel. This did give better shape when going down wind but it was a bit of a pain to deal with. Not worth the effort IMHO. Now, if are in a situation like Dave described - on a run for a looong distance - it might be worthwhile.

One possibility, if you want to experiment, is to grab the sheet BEFORE it reaches the fairlead, and take it under the lifelines and outside the shrouds, directly to a winch.

The other boats are usually made that way becasue the carry a Genoa that overlaps the spreaders and the shrouds. On a downwind run your main is going to probably cover the jib so If I were you I would rather start thinking about installing a whisker pole. It could take the sail out and ahead of the spreaders and you can run wing on wing.

With a whisker pole, he DEFINITLY need to run the sheets ouboard of the shrouds.

What size is your headsail, anyway!?
