What is the best way to fish new line through the mast on a 1985 tall rig?

Fish line

First, determine if you can use another halyard currently in the mast. Attach the new one to the current one to pull it the length of the mast. A fishing line, top-to-bottom of course, with a pencil sinker cut short to facilitate fishing through the bottom pully is the other option.

You could also go up the mast, feed it through and check the masthead while you're up there - never a bad idea. LaDonna

Duct tape

I recently replaced a halyard using duct tape. I layed the ends of the halyards end to end on a piece of duct tape about 6 inches in length and rolled the line tightly. It worked.

sew simple

Assuming that your mast is up and there is an old halyard already in place then replacing the halyard can easily be done by placing the ends of the lines together and sew them but-to-but with a needle and thread. Sewing provides strength to prevent seperation in the event of a minor snag so there is no danger of pulling apart as might happen with tape. It only needs 6 to 8 stitches and they dont have to be neat or pretty. The needle passes easily thru the line and is easy to cut away when done.

Rick's Sew Right

I've replaced all my halyards this past year using the same method. I think it's by far the simplest and safest way.
