Jib halyard on CDI roller jib

Just bought a used H-240 with roller CDI jib. The jib halyard is tied off down on top of the roller take-up wheel. There is no extra halyard to allow for lowering the sail if something goes awry with the roll-up. Is that typical? In an emergency where you could not wrap the sail around the headstay would you cut the halyard above the drum and hope it would run free and allow the sail to come down? Obviously I have not been provided with owner manuals. I would think one should have a lead at the end of the halyard so one could drop the sail and then raise it again.

Messenger Line

You tie a messenger line to the end of the halyard, so that after you drop the sail you can still reach the halyard. The messenger line is removed when the sail is up. Hope that helps. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Messenger Line

I just bought a used 2001 Hunter 260 with CDI roller furling, and it still had the messenger attached. I am totally new to furlers, so I asked one of the reps at the brokerage and he suggested coiling the messenger rather than cutting it off. As he put it, this would allow sending something else(what???) up if needed. I think coiling is asking for a birdsnest, but apparently the previous owner didn't have a problem with it in his one year of use and it was still attached within the ferrule("the little metal tube swaged on the halyard"). Any one have any thoughts on this suggestion of simply coiling and taping it for later use.

Coil??

I'd advise against coiling the messenger line. The halyard ties to a shackle on the furler drum. The coil would likely snarl when the sail is unfurled.

No coil.

Leaving a coil just sounds like an invitation to trouble. Just bend the messenger to the halyard when you need to lower the sail. Take if off after the sail is back up. Fair winds, Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

thanks - attach and detach mess. line

Thanks for the lesson. It makes sense to attach a messenger line when needed and not to have it hanging around when all goes well. I will use that system.

internal CDI halyard question

On my H22 it's very difficult to hoist the jib up the track - there's a small metal ferrule in the track which I think is the cause of the difficulty. the previous owner might have cut one side of the line too short and so the other end of the line still contains that metal piece and it's still in the track when the jib is fully hoisted. Has anyone replaced the internal CDI halyard without taking the extrusion piece off the forestay? thanks mike
