Jib, Genoa, Spinnaker... What sail for H22

I'm a first time owner of a H22 which I'm in the process of restoring. Among things missing is a jib sail. I've never owned a sailboat before but I'm learning. I've read about Genoa and Spinnakers and wonder if these are something to consider buying rather than the jib that originally came with this boat. I plan to sail in the Tampa Bay area (Gulf of Mexico) and sail on freshwater lakes in Northern Minnesota. What type of sail would be the best as an all-purpose sail? Should I consider a genoa? Since I'm not familiar with this boat nor any others for that matter, so I hoping owners of H22's could give me some advise. Also should I even consider more that one jib type sail and where would be a good place to get one. The other thing I was looking for is a manual for this boat as all the rigging for the mast, sails etc. came in a box and details of the rigging would be helpful. Any suggestions where I can find one. Thanks in advance for your help. Pete

110 Genoa

The H22 came with a 110 Genoa. I have been looking into and considering a 130 Genoa. The 110 works great and love it more with a roller furler. I have most of the origianl docu's for a 1984 H22 if interested email at rdasilva@rwu.edu

New 110 Jib

When you start looking for a new sail be sure and take a look at The Sail Wharehouse: (thesailwarehouse.com) I've purchased two mains and two jibs for different boats over the years and they are nice sails. About $350 for a new 110 for your H22. I'd start with the 110 if you are new at sailing. If your main sail is soft and saggy you should replace it too. She will handle a LOT better. Welcome to sailing.

Call Hunter

Hunter sent me a copy of owner information (manual). In my case this was more information that the original owners manual. However, I have not seen printed information on how to rig an H22 when all of the rigging was in a box. You probably need the help of someone who owns one. Pictures from H22 owners on this site would probably be a big help to you. Let us know what you need.

headsails

Hi, I got my h22 1983 model, a few years ago and it came with a good main and a thrashed jib. I also race in some one design fleets on other boats and found that the foward measurements are pretty close to the j24. These sails are very easy to come by, since racers tend to buy new sails every year, I even rigged a spin setup and the boat is pretty tolerable down wind now. This probably isn't the best advise to give to a new owner to try, but you could get a pretty incredible jib and genoa for very little price if you contact the j24 website or your local fleet. Good luck and great sailing.

A great help...

I want that thank everyone for all the suggestions you've made. After I bought this boat and started looking at all the disassembled hardware, cables, etc. my wife asked me if I knew how to put it all together. Without hesitation and in the true tradition of a "guy" I said "A piece of cake", but later that day I knew I had a rather daunting challenge ahead of me. I'm seriously thinking now of buying a roller furler for the jibsail. I looked into them and they seem to offer a very efficient control and seems very practical. Thanks again Pete

More than one jib!!

I would want at least a 110 and a working jib. If I could only have one, it would be the working jib. When the wind blows, you will be glad. Right now there are a lot of sails for sell on ebay. Because of the recent huricanes, there are a lot of people parting out their boat. You should expect to pay 100-200 for a used jib. I recently bought a spinnaker for under $150.00 there. Tip- dont bid until the last second.
