I'd like to know how a JIB number refer to it's size EX: JIB # 1,2 3; which one is bigger and how big ? And also what does a Genoa size refer to ? Genoa 135%; is that 135% of the foretriangle ? Thank's Yves Langlois S/V OPIUM

A #1 is 150%, a number 3 is 100%, on down to a number 5, which is the racing version of a storm sail. Technically, a "genoa" is anything larger than 100%, while a "jib" is anything smaller. On the big racing boats, you might have multiple versions of each genoa on board, such as a #1 heavy, a #1 light, et cetera.

Yves, John's answer is accurate and to the point. The J measure on a 34 is 13'9". A #1 genoa (150%) would then measure 20'7½" if you drew a line from the sheeting corner to a point at precisely 90 degrees from the luff. Do not forget however that it is only used as a reference. If you are into racing, then your club handicapper should measure the sail to properly assess your rating. Unless you have access to a very large clean floor, you will need to wait for a dry summer day to measure that sail on a lawn! The 34 being a masthead rigging, the luff is around 48+ feet ! Keep hope, there is only 3½ more months to wait.
