I read a couple of articles on roller furlers but I am still unsure if they operate so that one sheet simply unrolls and the other furls, or whether there is spring mechanism in the furler that aids in furling. If there is a spring, is there an ideal tension the furler should exert on the furling sheet?

When unfurling, usually you'll pull on the sheet, while keeping some tension on the furler control line so it'll wrap fairly on the drum. Likewise, when furling, you'll maintain a little tension on the sheet.

On my Furlex 200, the leeward sheet is used to unfurl the headsail, with some tension on the furling line to keep it from overwrapping on the drum. When furling, I blanket the headsail with the main on a broad reach, and start hauling in the furling line now keeping some slight tension on the leeward sheet.
