When sailing our 216 I have noticed that if one pulls down on the lazy sheet of the jib the jib sets better. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone have any ideas on how to make adownhaul on the jib USING THE LAZY SHEET? Thanks Luke

jib downhaul

We have a 25.5. Sometimes the jib just doesn't fall when we loose its halyard. So we rigged a downhaul from 1/4" rope and a couple of small blocks. The line is connected to the jib halyard shackle. Line goes up the forestay when the jib is raised and pulls the jib straight down the forestay when we lower the jib. Blocks are used to route the line back to the cockpit. We found it the best way to drop the jib without going forward. Makes single-handed jib management a lot easier.

If you are using the lazy sheet as a barber-hauler to get correct sail shape then your jib lead block needs to be adjusted. Slide the car further forward to get a better shape. If you have a fixed block for a jib lead you should replace it with a car and track. Many times boat builders take too many short cuts and as a result the owner has to make upgrades to what should have been on the boat originally.

Alan - How about some details?

Alan, we have had numerous postings here asking what other 216ers have done to compensate for the awful jib block arrangement on their boats. How about posting a photo and the manufacturer and model number of the track you've installed. If you have the measurements, that would also help. I've been wanting to do that but cannot figure out how to move the block outboard when reaching without using some sort of barber hauler system. Just being able to move it forward and back would probably be of little help and not worth the additional cost of the tracks and blocks. Thanks for your post. Bill, the jib is never lowered on a 216, it's on a furling drum and is mounted on the forestay.

BARBER HAULER ?

Alan What is a barber hauler? I'm unfamiliar with that term. Thanks Luke

BARBER HAULER ?

Barber Hauler, A line attached to the jib clew, used to adjust the angle of sheeting by pulling the sheet toward the centerline of the boat. Barber hauling allows the sail to be sheeted at a closer angle which gains pointing ability. However changing the angle of attack is not a substitute for draft depth and position. Mr Ernie, Garhauer makes adjustable lead blocks and track at a very reasonable price and the quality is excellent. By moving the lead blocks forward and easing the sheet you can produce a very acceptable reaching sail shape without having the move the leads outboard.
