Does anyone have any experince with using an on deck sail bag for hanked on jib/genny's? I don't have a roller furl. and get tired of taking the jib/genny off and on. I saw a canvas bag that stays on the deck and zips over the forestay. Any thoughts?

Jib Bag

Used one on a 25 for several years. It was convenient and easy to use. Finally weathered out and the zipper broke.Only inconvenience was that it hung right over the anchor well causing aggravation when we just wanted to motor out and anchor when there was no wind.

Make sense if you always use the same headsail

I had one on two boats. My first boat had a staysail with the bag and it made sense. Only time the staysail was changed was in storm conditions to a storm jib. My second boat had one for the genoa. Problem is I never know if I will be sailing in light or heavy air. I have both a jib and a genoa so I was always changing the sail and it was just in the way. It is now in my garage and unused.

Another "Yea"

We have one for the genoa, and plan on making one for the other sail (Kenny H, I'll take that old one in your garage!). Curently, when we pull the genoa off, we leave it in the bag, unhank it, and losen the snap shackle. When we put the genoa back on later, it's MUCH easer just leaving it in the bag, and putting the hanks back on, than digging a sail out of a bag and putting it on.

Headsail bags

My wife made them from cloth laundry bags. The bag drawstring was used to tie them on deck. She sewed an additional tie to the bottom so the bag could be tied down when the sail was drawn out the open end. Still works great.

Great thing to have

I have one, from West Marine, and I love it (although it was too expensive). As you say, it zips onto the forestay. It's also suspended off the deck, by the jib halyard - so the sail stays drier - and has a mesh bottom so that the sail can drain and breathe. If I change headsails, like Herb Parsons I use the 'deck' bag for storage instead of the regular sailbag (I only change sails before I go out). I also have a downhaul connected to the head of my headsail, down through the hanks, over a block at the tack, and leading back to the cockpit. Between the bag and the downhaul, it's much more practical for me to sail single-handed. And it reduces the time I have to spend pre- and post- sail. Deck Bag + Downhaul = Poor Man's Roller Furling! The only drawback: at the end of the season, I notice that my headsail is rumpled and crumpled: not smooth and wrinkle-free as it would have been if I'd flaked it after each sail. Dick

JIB BAG

We also use a jib bag and have been very happy with it. We purchased all of our canvas products from a dealer on e-bay and have been ver happy with them. They were a lot better on price than west marine and the quality was very nice also.
