Depends on orientation of the threads in the fabric (warp and weft) or laminate orientation, and which is the stronger versus direction of the intended stress.
Parallel panels along the leech, luff and foot .... are common in radial patterned sails. Radial, et al constructed sails usually have little 'adjustability' in the shape, as the shape you design/build is the shape you get; not like a cross-cut sail where stretching out one side will alter the general shape of the sail. In radial panel construction the orientation of the strongest 'set' of fibers or films/laminates is along the 'edges' of the sail .... the benefit is that the sail only very slightly stretches out of shape when fully windloaded; it generally retains it set shape all through its target windstrengths.
