I think there are two options...

I think it would depend on whether or not it's just the ring, or if there is a tear in the sail from where the ring used to be out to the edge of the sail. If it's just a busted ring, have a sailmaker attach a new one and carry on. If it's ripped out, I think I'd just opt to get a new sail- The sail you have is worn out to somewhere near the end of its useful life if major and critical pieces are coming off! -Jon Bastien H23/H25

HAPPENED TO ME

Happened to me last year on Lake Michigan. The webbing chafed thru and the clew pulled out. I figure the cause to be from furling the sail to much in high winds and having the sail flog to much. Have since added storm jib from Sail Rite and have sailed in steady 26K winds with double reefed main and storm jib nice and flat at 5K. Hard to believe the difference. Repaired jib with new webbing and leather from Sail Rite.

Same here!

My jib clew ring blew out, too. Big suspect was the webbing -- probably UV damage since it was outside the blue edging when everything was furled. I replaced it with three strips of webbing and haven't had a problem since. I used colored webbing for better UV resistance.

Needle

What did you use to sew in the heavy area of the clew? We tried several needles and could not penetrate the material.

I used rivets

The webbing gave out on my 95 H 26 jib, too. I had trouble getting a needle through it so I installed replacement webbing with pop rivets. I used a pointed soldering iron to make the holes. That way, the hole edges are sealed to prevent fraying of the sail. I then used pop rivets and it seems to work well. Some old salts are probably cringing as they read this, but it was an easy solution that holds well. Ned Christensen Second Wind
