Jet ski vs Rudder

Last weekend I decided to take my son who is four and my boat to a local lake that we have been sailing on off and on all summer. On the second day we decided to moore off shore just far enough for walking to the swimming area. After swimming we went back to the boat a 72 cat 22, that we bought earlier this year. As we were fixing lunch a jet skier buzzed the back of the boat (about 10 feet away) and made some large waves that drove us in further and the rudder bottomed out, the force broke on of the holding pins and the bottom of the rudder is split. I understand trully why sailors do not like jet ski's or I guess the un responsible people who sometimes ride them. Why is there such a will for these people to bother those just trying to enjoy some quality time?? Any way I'm looking for info on replacing the rudder blade?? Is there some type of kick up rudder? Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Troy Baker GreatFalls, MT wildflowersx2@hotmail.com

It's not just jet skiers either...

On the lake where I sail it's an endless parade of idiots plowing through 20-30 anchored boats at full throttle. No wonder I can't keep my anchor set!!! -Keith K.

Report them

If they were the direct cause of damage to your boat due to their reckless behavior, you have an obligation to the others that use your waterways to report them to the Coast Guard, local sheriff's office or local police. If they are coming that close to you, then they will probably misjudge the distance soon and either kill themselves or someone else. Jet skis do not operate like a typical boat. They can easily slide sideways across the water and hit something or someone. Please report them. It may save their lives.

Replacement

Well, regardless if you get the inconsiderate jet skier... Catalina Direct is a great source for replacement parts. 1-800-959-7245. They charge for their catalog but I found it a wealth of knowledge as well as a good ref. for parts. Kevin
