Jet ski as a dingy for your sailboat

Has anyone ever put davits on their sailboat for a jet ski? We have a 40 Catalina and think it would be great fun to have the jet ski along when cruising but are not sure how to do it.

Too Heavy?

I would think a jet ski weighs way more than a dinghy, so the davits would have to be extremely heavy duty. It might also change the sailing characteristics of your boat. Frankly, I very much prefer the dinghy. A jet ski would change the entire sailing experience for me.

too heavy but

My friend Eric used to hoist his stand up jet ski on his foredeck of his little Columbia 26 Mk2. He would lift it with main halyard and jib halyard, pulling alternately until he cleared the lifelines. If it's a sit down, how much does it weigh? I would think it's too heavy. You would have to have super beefy davits with monster backing.

Rowing Dink

What's wrong with a rowing dink? You get a good workout, do not stink up the neighbourhood and do not upset your fellow boaters and the little remaining wildlife with all that noise. Your davits would have to be built like a Russian tank as those PWC's seem to be heavy and I could see the PWC swinging around and bringing down your whole arch/davits etc. In a few years, PWC's will be banned anyway when the world comes to it's senses.

Sure if you want to make lots of enemies

I'm sure it could be done but just how does one actually put Jet Ski and Sailboat in the same sentence? I think doing what your suggesting is one of the most offensive things a sailor can do! Those things are as obnoxious as Hum Vee's driven by soccer mom's. Now if you had a 40 foot Sea Ray we would expect you to drive the Hummer and have the Jet Ski but as a sailor your throwing us all for a loop. My guess is this is a troll! No sailor would seriously ask a question like that would they??

Sailorman, Some of the larger yachts up

here on the Chesapeake have a Boston Whaler on top of the deck house. They just pick it up with the crane and put it in the water. The BIG yachts have sportfishers for their ships boat. A forty footer is permitted a RIB with a fifty horse engine.

Have you considered towing it...

Sailerman, We tow ours behind the boat and it works out pretty well. I hate admitting to have one of those twinky's(waverunner), but I do. That's what the wifey unit wanted, and if that's what it takes to keep her interested in sailing then so be it. It has also provided entertainment for our young family, which will hopefully keep us sailing for many years to come. I'll bet our waverunner doesn't make any more noise idling through the anchorage than does a dink with an outboard on the back. What doesn't make sense to me is why everyone is so critical without answering the question that was posted! I guess these guy's are all such geniune sailors that they don't even have an auxiliary engine in their boat.

I'll bet the Maltese Falcon has jet skis....

..and a small motor boat, helicopter pad, and so on.. So maybe sailerman is on to something. abe

Catalina 40? It would be tight but

you could do it. You can pull it inside. You'll need to build an extended swim platform and install a big winch and davit to hull it up. They are fun for a while but you get bored with them quick!

MarkZ, Hi! A silly question for you.

Can a boat on a fresh water lake be salty? ;)

its not the machine

.... but the rider that is the nuisance. A sailboat in the wrong hands can be a lot more annoying than a jet ski in the right hands. To get back to the original question, it would depend on the type of jet ski, the weight of them can vary considerably.

C400 Transom stress

Having helped a dock neighbor install davits on his C400, I was surprised by how thin the transom was when we drilled into it. Was glad he took the advice to add substantial backing plates or his rigid dinghy would have likely ripped it apart. Putting anything heavier on a C400 davit like a jet ski would be questionable if only for this reason...

Ross, the answer is yes...

Your question is a little off topic, but study the navigable waterways and you'll see that a fresh water boat can certainly be salty! Why do you ask?

The only fantasy I have that doesn't involve my

wife, has to do with a 30.06, a clear sight picture at 300 yards of a jetski and a FIREBALL!

Why Not Jetski

Before we got a real sailboat we had two three seater seadoo's and a 18 hobie cat. It was great our 5 son's loved them all, they love playing water world. The kids got older and busy and we moved on to a real sailboat and sold all the toys. Nick

Teaching Our Young Ones Different Values

I have never posted more than one response to the same thread. Seems to me that the Yamaha TV ads of a PWC thundering across a millpond have gotten to some readers and certainly to our easily impressionable young folk and spouses. Maybe there are better values we can teach them. 1. the importance of peace and tranquility in our otherwise busy lives; 2. the importance of being doers rather than spectators watching other people doing things; 3. the importance of our natural world and trying to protect it; 4. the importance of providing for ourselves. We may all have to do that in a few years. 5. the importance of being able to navigate and know where they are on the planet. 6. the importance of walking their own path and not being caught up envying others and their toys. Teach them the joy of sailing. Pete

Idiot's

I think we can all agree that we hate idiots on jetskis but do we hate the machine or the inconsiderate rider? I don't think that in itself the jetski is the problem. If operated properly and with respect to others it is not different then any thing else out there with a motor including our sailboats or inflatable. I am friends that are power boaters and the follows the rules, are courteous and respectful of others, what more can you ask for? On the other hand I had a sailboat under motor power come within 2 feet of hitting me while I was sailing. He was a total jackass even though he was in a sailboat! It is the operator not the machine that is the problem. There was a thread a while back about someone taking your slip or mooring while you were out for a day...is it ok if it is a sailboat but not if it is a powerboat or are the idiots no matter what they ride? To answer the original question, I think that the jetski would be too heavy for the davits and I would not want to tow it but that would be up to you.
