I generally sail in the area between Sandy Hook and the George Washington Bridge and occasionally go up into the Long Island Sound. This year I would like to take my Cat. 30 to Cape May and back. I plan to sail all the way through to Cape May and stop on the way back at Atlantic City and Point Pleasant. Any advise or comments would be appreciated. How long would you expect the trip down to take. It is approx. 125 kn but I don't know if I will be faced with a headwind all the way down. Are there any particular areas to watch out for.

Bob-- I keep my Catalina 27 in Stone Harbor, about ten miles north of Cape May, so I am familiar with the southern portion of your trip. I have been through Atlantic City's inlet many times. It's a good on to use, and it's well marked. Commercial and party fishing boats use it daily. Cape May Inlet is also excellent. It's well marked, and used by commercial and fishing boats all the time. My home inlet is Hereford--it's shallow and unmarked. Local knowledge is required to enter or exit--avoid it at all costs. Townsends Inlet is ok--it's pretty well marked, and used by locals and some fishing boats. Will you be sailing overnight on the way down? A southerly seabreeze prevails (at least in this area) and normally, we have a manageable sea associated with it. Good luck with your trip. Randy

Thanks

Randy - thanks for the input. I do plan to sail overnight going down and make stops on the way back. I have never sailed in the area of Stone Harbor but do know it well. Vacationed there about 5 years in row with my family. It is a great area. I guess the prevailing southerly means we have to beat most of the way down. This could make for a slow trip.
