I'm thinking about buying a new (078)Jeanneau 36i. Since it's a new boat I'm having trouble finding any reviewscomments about the 36i. Does anybody have any opinions they can share?

Look at the Catalina 350 and the Hunter 36... Don't discount the Hunter.

I agree with Jim concerning the H36. I have some friends who have one of these. It is a very, very nice boat. Tons of storage space, and very will finished. Georgeous inside. While it might not be my first choice for an around the world cruise, the boat is more than adequate for Carribean and coastal cruising.

Excalibur - Catalina - Hunter

I did deliveries for 25 years and made more trips than I want to remember. Yes, did Jeanneau, Beneateau, Hunter, Hans Christian (Hansy is in a separate class and these three are not worthy of mention near a Hans), swan, Lord Nelson, J-160, Nordic Tugs and every other yacht you can think of. The people who buy these are not going to listen to reason, they buy them NOT for protection in a survival storm, but on others will be impressed. I am not impressed. Even a Hunter is indeed better than these Frenchies, but there are better yachts, like a Catalina or Excalibur is a good cruising yacht. The truth is sometimes not something one is receptive to, but there it is. Yes, I know Bennys are used by Moorings and know a skipper who use to bring 'em back from Tonga to LA too. You should hear his and his wife's stories about they're trips in the Bennies!

I don't know the Jenne 36i that well

I have seen them them at the boat shows, there are also J37's from our marina that are time share boats and they seem decent. The J36i's are not that new, I am not sure why there are no reveiws. Maybe its because seem to be like a lot of other boats and not really distinguish itself from the pack. If you are looking in the 36' size a Classic in that range is the Catalina 36 (its actually 37' 4" overall) that has a great pedigree. Its a great sailing boat thats been sailed all over the world, but still in the Coastal Cruising category. Its a great combination of sailing, stability, form, function and good looks in a reasonable price, package, resale and maintainability. You can get one almost new or 25 years old for a lot less than a new J36i. The J36i seems like a much lighter boat so if you are really focusing on racing, light winds and not planning on heavy weather the jenne might be better. If you like larger hardware, winches, etc and things like solid Teak Doors down below you'll appreciate the Catalina. One other thing, if you really value a strong boat owners association the Catalina 36 is in a class unto itself. Great Support, people, get togethers and knowledge base from the C36 International Organization. take a look at the C36 owners association here www.catalina36.org If you are patient, Catalina is planning on a new Catalina 375 which is taking the great attributes of the C36 and upgrading and expanding on it.

Jeanneau ok, I agree with the others......

Jeanneau makes a nice boat. It looks pretty . I think you get a better sea boat with the Catalina. My opinion , go for the Catalina 350. They are substantially more rugged.
