Java to Retire

After a glorious 13 years of giving us joy the of sailing, our H356 “Java” will be going up for sale. Joan and I are hoping to make our last sail this coming week to the Seven Seas Cruising Association GAM at Annapolis.
My health has had a rough ride this last summer. I restarted chemo this last April after a wonderful sail in the Florida Keys and Ft Myers to visit family and grandkids. That chemo has affected my balance which is not a good thing to have on a sailboat. In August it was decided to stop chemo since it wasn't helping. We tried to get into clinical trials at Georgetown Hospital but got hit with a double-edge sword. Don't qualify since the cancer has not spread – WHAT? That's good – no spread. So with that I went back into chemo this last week with the same stuff I had last year. It worked very well without making me sick. Time will tell....

I will not stop sailing (got friends with boats) and will continue reading on this site... So behave yourselves...

You can never quit sailing as you have boats out to sea. Those of friends and family that may be cruising or just out for a day sail. Follow their routes and the weather and be prepared to offer land based support should it be needed. Continued participation in the Forum is required so you may continue to share your knowledge and experience. Have to say that some of my best sailing related experiences took place ashore. See you around.

Do take your friends up on the sailing offers. I have one fellow with diabetes and the early stages of Parkinsons who sails with me frequently since he can't sail either of his boats. I can tell you it is rewarding for him to sail and a bigger kick for me to see his smile when sailing. Good luck and thanks for your civility when sharing your knowledge.

There are a lot of us novices that can benefit greatly from your experience through these boards. Please continue to help guide us. Also, if you are ever in SC, I'd be honored if you would sail with me. I think I could learn more in a hour with someone of your experience than in any class. Good luck with your treatments.

Jim;

I can only imagine what it is like to give up that gal, JAVA. I too had a terrible time retiring as I loved being a sailboat dealer even enjoying that sight when you took Miss JAVA for the first time north from Oriental in winter time. However, you as always my dear friend whom I have called you my brother after 25 years of knowing you, you are making a wise decision as I too now experience balance issues and can no longer climb up tall ladders least alone up a bosun's chair unless I have some of that moonshine of mine. The good thing, you have a lot of respect and many friends who will share their sailboat with Joan and you. If there is anything I can do, call me anytime of the day or night and have fun weather permitting. God Bless You my little brother.

Although we never met, I feel like we had a lot in common through our Hunter 356's. We bought Persistence 13 years ago too and enjoyed your many posts on this forum. I am sorry we missed you and Seadadler in Punta Gorda when we were there in 2013-14 on Persistence.

We wish you well and hope your illness is quickly resolved and you have many more years of sailing in your future.

best of luck!

Hi Jim, I do hope and pray that your treatment goes well and that it rids that stuff from your system. Unpleasant, I'm sure. Ditto a sail on Belle-Vie if you ever make it to the PNW. She would be happy as a clam to have you aboard.

Keep us posted on your progress. And keep up your postings.

Jim, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge over the years. I'm happy to hear you will continue to stay on the forums. We are in Florida in the winter and would be honoured to have you take the wheel on our 356 anytime.
Take care, Bob

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
The area I sail will greatly miss Java. Jim and Joan are well known, and well loved. Great people.

I really don't know what else to say other than I am glad that you will still be sailing. I am so glad that I got to raft up with you guys this past May. As far as I am concerned, you are a legend in these parts and the life of the party.

Best of luck with the treatment Jim. Sorry to see read you're selling the boat. If you're ever in the Montreal area, it would be a privilege to have you aboard for a sail.
