Well everyone, after leaving for the Bahamas in November, we have finally returned. Got into Fort Pierce,FL yesterday. Did not have a smooth crossing of the Gulf Stream. Winds were from the NE, E and then from the SE. Swells from the NE and SE. Made for a very LUMPY ride. Waves were running about 4ft with the occasional 6 footer to keep you awake.

We had a wonderful trip and made it through the Abacos, Eleuthera's and Exuma's. Met many wonderful boaters out there who will drop most anything to help another boater. Great community...

Forgot to mention, Being in the middle of the Gulf Stream being tossed is not a place to be changing your primary fuel filter....

Welcome home, glad you had a great time. When did you realize you should have changed the filter before you left? :):):)

I had checked before we left. I have a clear bowl on the Racor filter and showed nothing. After getting off the Bahama bank we started getting rolled left and right 10 to 20 deg. After about 5 hours of this and shaking the hell out of the fuel tank, I noticed the engine rpm's slowly going down. Went down and checked the bowl and OH ****, can't see through it. Knew right then the engine was getting fuel starved. Side note here: We had taken in the main sail due to the roll and was using just the jib for stabilization and assist.

Changed the filter got the air out of the lines and everything was fine. At this time we kept the engine off and continued sailing with the jib. Wind final shifted enough to our port side we could put out about 1/3 of the main. Boat was sailing around 4.5 to 8 kts depending which wave was hitting us. Wheeee.
Turned the engine back on about 3 mi from Ft Pierce and the bowl is still clean.

I REALLY REALLY need to get the tank cleaned out when we get home...

I figure when I move up to a big boat, I'd run a 2 filter parallel system, with a valve switch to change between the 2.

so often I hear of clogged filters at the worst time...

-at least it wasn't in a channel.



.....and where is the trip report? I would like to read about exumas...

Welcome back, Jim. Your time in warm weather sounds wonderful. I had to clean out my fuel tank after losing power as you did. But I was within 1/4 mile of my slip with no wind. Thanks to a son with a power boat, we got in. Cleaning mostly involved opening tank access port then repetitively taking suction via a hose off the tank bottom, draining into a bucket. Couldn't see through my racor either.

I had so much trouble with WIFI that I gave it up. Will try to up load everything again now that I'm back.

Glad to hear you made it back safe and sound,how long you plan to be in Florida before heading home.
We are getting ready for a 3 week trip south to the Keys.

Fuel filters

Jim, I am reminded of my "younger daze" from your reply. Because I was very, very frightful of not being able to bleed our engine when I first bought our boat in 1998, I put off changing the fuel filter for almost two years and had no idea of when the PO had changed it. The bowl always looked fine. When I finally learned how to bleed the beast, and took off the filter itself, it was really, really crudded up. Lesson learned, one can't tell from the outside what the guts of the filter may have captured. This is more for others than for you...

I checked several times over the winter & saw nothing new. Looking forward to hearing about your winter. Welcome back to America :)

We are moving up to Vero Beach on Friday. Plan to drive over on Sat and return Monday. Going to be a fast visit.

Hey Jim, welcome back! Can't wait to hear about your trip. we're about 6 weeks from launch (sob). Went up to see Escape today and at least all the snow's gone.
BTW, after rough weather fuel issues in my 29.5, I set up Escape with dual filters and a selector valve-If the primary clogs, I just have to turn a valve to switch to a clean racor.
