OK, you guys are so helpful.........Here's one for you. I have an 87 H23 with the Z spar mast and boom. My outhaul line (the one in the middle) is jammed and I can't budge it. The only thing I can figger is there's a line tied to cable inside and I'm afraid the knot is caught on something. Has anyone else had this problem and how'd you fix it? I'm about to drill out the riveted ends to get inside there and take a good look.

There is more than a knot in there.

Mike, I am inclined to agree with you on drilling out the rivits. I tied a new replacement line to my old outhaul to pull in a new one. I assumed it would be a simple task. WRONG! It appears there is a 2:1 purchase inside the boom. I had one @#$%^@$ of a time getting a new line pulled in. When I did, it took nearly twice as much line as the boom was long. I should have known this I guess, but I didn't. If you do drill out the rivits, you may need to remove both ends to get at the problem. Sorry I don't know what it looks like inside, I just know it had more hardware than I thought. Maybe one of the experts can fill in the blanks Ward

Had a similar problem on my 410. The second reef line was wrapped around the outhaul. Outhaul worked fine but reef line didn't. I was able to pull both line out from the aft part of the boom and untangle. Bryce H410 S/V Spellbinder

Ward's right...

The Z-spar has a 2:1 purchase inside the boom. If I remember right, There is a single block attached to the end of the outhaul cable. The outhaul line attaches inside the boom near the gooseneck, through the block on the cable, and back to the exit fitting at the gooseneck. It's a pain to replace, but it can be done... I agree that drilling the rivets may make the job easier. --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Outhaul is 3:1

Drill the rivets. They're pop rivets and the tools/supplies are available from Home-D or Lowe's or what ever's local. Price is in the order of 10 bucks. Be sure to get Al rivets. It's not a bad idea to re-do the boom internals every few years anyway. Be prepared, you may need to replace the blocks on the outhaul. Mine were frozen the 1st time I had them out. Greg
