I agree. Joan is a great person and a strong person but I know that this has to be hard for her.

Jim Seamans (JAVA) memorial service was held yesterday. The sky and weather was perfect for remembering this dear friend. Bad Obsession, Elle and I were present representing the forum. There were many testimonials many of which went to the very essence of this dear friend. First family and then friends spoke. Wow, what a tremendous outpouring but this also included the funny side of Jim and even the Viagra, streaking, showering on the deck in a secluded cove in the, well let's just leave that to the imagination was included. Jim always made you feel welcome inviting you onto Java for either drinks and/or food. One gentleman said that 60% of talking over the VHF was spent talking with Jim and everyone knew him on the Chesapeake and Potomac. Not only he was a friend but also offered to help anyone at any time.
I remember the first trip for Jim on Java was going north in the dead of winter along with a captain that I had arranged for. Joan was smart not to have been on that chilly willy ride while everyone else was going south. Found out that Jim had a tendency to go north in the winter when Bad Obsession told me that both Jim and Joan sailed north to attend Bad Obsession's wedding. As for Elle, well found another dent in the car. Ha!
When Jim first told me about his cancer, he said he was going to fight the fight and live life to the fullest. That was Jim to the very end. In January, he snow shoveled so his next door neighbors could come over for dinner and were surprised to see him standing out there with snow shovel in hand. In fact he was applying crown molding before his death. Instead of a normal funeral, he wanted to be remembered in a good way. There was no question that Jim Seamans or Mr. JAVA lived life to the fullest helping others making friends along the way.
Joan lives in a very supportive community who were tremendous helpful and I know that means a lot. As for Java, it is still for sale but Joan will be with family at home taking care of business in May.

that was a very nice write up Dave...by and about some very good friends ...i never meet him but by the write up and the friendship displayed in this he must have been a great one to know...thanks for posting this ...and i am sure that he is on some really good sailing grounds as i type this........ thank you for sharing.....

Every time I hear the song "So Bad Last Night" I think of Jim. LOL
It was great to see some other sailors. Joan seems to be doing okay. My in-laws are moving into her neighborhood so I will be able to keep up with her some.
There is a huge hole in the Chesapeake Bay right now. Jim was so well known and such a personality there that it will take a lot of work to fill it! I doubt that one person will ever come close.

I never met Jim but I decided to call him one day. Just out of the blue called him. He was out shopping with Joan and seemed to enjoy the respite. What a nice man. I wish I could call him again.
60 minutes last night had a good review of Duke Cancer Research as to the Polio virus which has been altered as a new method for curing cancer. There is discussion that this may lead research into a new direction as to curing cancer to include pancreatic cancer which is working but a lot has to be done. It started with a very severe cancer in the brain and now FDA has fast tracked Duke for treating patients. If you know anyone, review what Duke is doing and the 60 minutes segment from last night. My wife who worked there 20 years ago had to explain what was going on but that is covered in that segment.
Kloudie; Thanks for the heads up. As Ann said, they had to find the right path to go and Polio, well it may be a start. I wish it could have been found sooner for a good friend of ours, Jim.
I was always hoping that they could find a cure before Jim passes. I hope that they find a cure so no one else has to go through that.
Been away from the forum for a number of months so just found out now about Jim's passing away. So very sorry to learn that sad news. Never met him personally but remember exchanging threads when he came out with the news about the toughest fight he had to take. I'm including Joan and his family and friends in my thoughts this time of sorrow. Sincere condolences to you all,
