Whoa, I had to run down to the garbage can on the 1st floor of our condos to retrieve the box for my recently purchased Jabsco Y-valve after I read your comment in the previous thread about replacing y-valves. So the Jabsco units are bad about leaking? I chose it mainly because of the locking feature, does Whale make one that you can lock in one discharge position or another? Any other options if not? I really want to be able to lockout the discharge line to the macerator. Thanks for saving me a mess.

You may not be able to have everything you want...

Good quality y-valves have a "barrel" inside that the handle rotates to open one side or the other...solid, sturdy, pretty much leakproof. Whale puts a 5 year warranty on 'em. Jabsco y-valves, otoh, just have a VERY flimsy little "gate" inside that the handle swings from one side to the other. A bit of TP or something like a watermelon seed (don't pretend you NEVER swallow any!<G>) caught under can break it or jam it...force the handle, and you can break more than that. And...they leak after only a little wear! It's nice to be able to lock a y-valve...but better to have one that will last more than year or two--if that long. The easiest way to lock it: drill a hole in the handle big enough to run a plastic tie wrap (keep a supply on hand) through. Or replace the switch for your macerator with one that requires a key. However... The thru-hull should ALWAYS be kept closed except when actually dumping the tank too...and your seacock doesn't have a locking feature. So not having a locking feature on your y-valve shouldn't be THAT much of an inconvenience after all! Btw...shop around for it. Prices are all over the wall..WM is by far the highest.

Thanks again...

Peggie, you are such a great resource on this website! I do NOT want to be back in there replacing a y-valve anytime soon, so Whale it is. The swivel outlets on the Jabsco worried me as well. I figured out a way to lock the Whale unit during a search on the internet that gave me some inspiration. Defender seems to have best price currently, beating others by $20-30.

Can you provide a link

to the Whale valve at Defender? I have only found the Y connector by Whale. There is one other item called a diverter valve. Is that what you are planning to use? Thanks! Kathy B331 - August Winds II

Kathy

Go to www.defender.com and on their search form (upper left of home page), type in Whale DV5606. It is also called a diverter as Peggie told you.
