Hi!
I have a 36.2 1996 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey and am having issues with my JABSCO toilet. i would really appreciate some advice before i starting taking the thing apart.
first issue:
After use of the toilet the flush control is shut and the toilet bowl is empty. After a few minutes, the bowl fills to the waterline from the holding tank. (eww) Has anyone else experienced this problem or have recommendations on how do fix it?
Second issue:
When the Flush control is in the open position water usually enters the bowl. However, sometimes it doesn't. In the past i have had to remove the hose that attaches to the pump, cover the hole with my thumb to regain suction and then replace hose. However, this seems to be a re-occuring problem and is a pain when i would rather be enjoying my sailing trip.
Thanks for the advice!

dont know much about the jabsco unit ...but from what all i have read on here the best thing you can do for your self is deep six the jabsco and get a PHII pronto....the raw sewage backing up in the bowl is prolly the joker valve being bad assuming there is one in the unit....if you search the archives you will find a wealth of info on this subject....

Regarding the first issue I had exactly the same problem. I had waste returning from the holding tank to the bowl. Actually it was most probably waste from the pipe connecting the toilet to the top of the holding tank. I first replaced the joker valve with no sucess. Eventually I replaced the "old style" pump with a new twist n lock. Problem solved!! Everything perfect now.
I haven't understood your second issue. When you say water is entering into the bowl do you mean with or without pumping it? Because if you don't get water while pumping it's most probably the pump's seal housing assy.

Hi, I replaced the original jabsco head with a new jabsco unit about 2 years ago (twist lock) and mine has the same issue. I already bought a service kit last year and need to replace the seals sometime.. (there is not a lot of price difference between the service kit and a new head).. My seat was cracked also, so was as cheap to just buy the new one.. When the bowl backfills, I can hear air sucking past the seals in the pump or joker valve.. My solution for the past year is to pump the bowl dry, then flush the toilet using fresh water from the tap in the bathroom.. At least when it backfills a little, it is backfilling with fresh water from the pump.. Still not ideal, but less nasty !

Alyann:

Your best advise is to junk the Jabsco ("JTJ").

I would suggest that you consider a Raritan unit. The PH unit or if you would like to consider a Sea Era (electric) are both excellent units. We have had a Sea Era on our Hunter Vision for 3 years without a burp (excuse the expression). Everything gets ground up before it sends it down the discharge hose, so it helps prevent clogs too.

Hi!
I am having issues with my JABSCO toilet.
first issue:
After use of the toilet the flush control is shut and the toilet bowl is empty. After a few minutes, the bowl fills to the waterline from the holding tank. (eww) Has anyone else experienced this problem or have recommendations on how do fix it?
As others have suggested, most likely you're seeing is waste in the line that never made it to the tank. I'm guessing that you prob'ly stop pumping just as soon as the bowl is empty and never use the dry mode except to move the last little bit of water out of the bowl

The fix: flush longer in the dry mode. Any toilet that's working anywhere near factory specs can move bowl contents up to 6' in the dry mode.

Second issue:
When the Flush control is in the open position water usually enters the bowl....
That's because water outside the boat is seeking its own level INSIDE the boat via the toilet intake thru-hull. That happens when the toilet is below the waterline.

The fix: a vented loop in the toilet intake. It does NOT go between the thru-hull and the pump...it goes between the pump and the bowl, and needs to be at least 6-8" above waterline AT ANY ANGLE OF HEEL...which, on most sailboats, puts it about 3' above the toilet. See the drawing in the installation and owners manual for your toilet. Jabsco manual toilet instructions

The above applies to ALL manual toilets, not just Jabsco. He'd have the same problems if his toilet were a PH II or PHC. I suggest all of you check out the link in my signature below...it'll take you to a comprehensive "marine toilets and holding tanks 101" manual that'll help you learn to prevent problems like this.

Had the same problem and replaced the pump unit with the twist and lock upgrade. Problem was solved, but I agree that due to the pricing of the replacement part, you're almost better off waiting for West Marine to have a sale and replace the whole unit.

Instead of getting a new head, get the RARITAN PHII-LBA or PHC-LBA, which is everything for a Raritan PHII or PHC head but the bowl. They sell them here on SBO and they're a good deal.
