peggy...i noticed you mentioned jabsco has had problems with their manual toilet pumps in the past 2-3 years. i just purchased one and wondered if you knew if they were making any sort of retro-fit parts available.

Six years and going strong

Doug, Our Jabsco has been flawless since I installed it almost six years. I would have bought another one for the "new" boat, but the bolt holes didn't line up. Hope you have as good of luck, PM

They've had two problems recently

Dry/Flush valve failure--which causes the toilet act like it's clogged, and flapper valve failure (won't bring in any flush water). Both are replaceable parts...the flapper valve is also included in the rebuild kit. However, I wouldn't replace either one unless it fails, 'cuz it's a quality control issue...Like many high-volume mass production mfrs these days, Jabsco has found it to be more profitable to repair or replace failed parts than invest in higher quality materials and production standards. That's how they keep the price of their toilets (and a lot of other things too) lower than any other mfr. .90% of 'em never develop a problem and have an average lifespan, about 10% have one or both problems...and a few of 'em turn out to be really GOOD ones.

Mine gone bad already

and it's in my 2001 270. It has developed lots of fine cracks at the base of the handle and water is starting to leak out. I notice they sell the unit at West Marine for about $125.00. I'm just going to replace it, I guess, unless I should consider a different brand- if so, would it fit the same holes?

Scott, it's still under warranty, so...

While jabsco isn't a toilet I'd ever recommend buying, I can't see spending money for something you can replace for free. Contact your dealer...if he's too far away to swap it out, you may have to do the work yourself, but it's not hard--just two hoses and four bolts. Or, since it has to be replaced anyway, see what kind of price difference he'd charge you to upgrade to a better head if you do the work to swap it out. If you can cut a good deal, my choice would be Raritan Cricket...has a diaphragm pump under the bowl instead of the usual piston/cylinder pump beside the bowl, so it fits in the same space as your "compact" Jabsco...and since diaphragms have no moving parts to wear, itdoesn't need periodic rebuilding. Check it out on the Raritan website at http://www.raritaneng.com

Hey, thanks!

I tend to forget about using warranties! Well, I'll drop the dealer an E-mail, see what he'll do. Maybe I'll mention the compass light that's been out while I'm at it. Good advice!

Peggy-Do the Raritan holes fit Jabso?

You mentioned that the Raritan fits the same space as the Jabsco - that's something I've often wondered - but, do the holes on the Raritan the same pattern as the Jabsco? Thanks in advance, Wynn Ferrel

Nope...but new models of the same toilet rarely

match older model bolt holes either...designs change. It's not a big deal. Fill the holes, then cover with a nicely finished piece of 1/4" or 1/2" piece of teak or mahogany...screw it down, don't glue it down, and seal the edges with silicone sealant to keep moisture from getting under it.

Follow up...

I spoke with Jabsco about the backwash problem I had been having. They said it was either the joker valve or the flapper valve both of which they were dropping in the mail to me at no charge.

make mine a raritan

I've had half a dozen boats in the past 6 years. All needed new heads. The Raritan is much more wife friendly than the Jabsco's.. Well worth the money.
