J/24 anchor roller?

I have a 1979 J/24 that my wife and I use for just sailing around Waikiki. At most, we might be in a Friday night beer can race. No concerns about adhering to one design guidelines or anything like that.

My wife wants me to install something that will make it easier to anchor for the times when we want to stop offshore and take a swim (depth 30-50'). Currently we just toss the anchor off the bow and hitch it to a cleat.

What could I install that would make the process simpler without getting into too much heavy modification. I was thinking of an anchor roller that would allow the anchor to stay mounted and then just using a shackle to attach the rode whenever we are planning to use it. In this scenario, I would forego the chain. I know that may be heresy, but seems like not such a big deal for the use we are planning.

Anyone have any suggestions?

There are number of different styles of aftermarket anchor rollers. They will through bolt through the deck with a backing plate. Defender.com has a good selection.

Most anchors will set better with at least a short section of chain. 15 to 20 feet of chain would be adequate for your planned use.

If you're planning to have to go out to the bow to attach the rode to the anchor anyway, what is the point of having a roller? The weight of an anchor for a J/24 isn't too much to carry, and the distance from the cockpit to the bow chock isn't so far. You could throw it overboard while standing by the shrouds, let the rode run, and then place it in the bow chock. No holes to drill, gear to buy, or layout to worry about. KISS.

:Again, check with Garhaurer Marine. I found one that fit my new Mantus perfectly. That style anchor. like other plow types, requires a long base. Anyway, the price was excellent
