J-22 main sail on Hunter 23?

My Hunter 23 main sail has a few patches and is probably near end of life. I'm thinking about getting a newer sail but don't want to invest in new quite yet for a variety of reasons (cost, my kids are crew, need to work on boat setup so I don't destroy main). Has anyone tried putting a J-22 main sail on a Hunter 23? Mine is the 1986 wing keel model. J-22 dimensions are Luff 25'8", foot 8'10" vs Hunter 23 Luff 25'10", foot 9'8". J-22 uses boltrope on the mast but slugs could be added to fit the H23. There is a healthy supply of decent J-22 used mains due to popularity of the boat and how much it is raced. Any feedback on my chances of making a J-22 sail work form me? I searched the forum but don't come up with much (why can't they give the J-22 a more searchable name?). Thanks for any feedback, Geoff

I dont see why not

And depending on the boltrope dimensions, you could thread the rope into the mast track. The foot seems a good bit shorter, which may look a little silly? But i'm pretty sure it would be a good fit. I'll keep this in mind too!

J-22 main sail on Hunter 23

I don't see why you couldn't do it. Your "P" dimensions are close enough but the "E" or foot is almost a foot smaller than on the J22. You will be sacrificing a certain amount of sail area but it will surely move your boat.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I'll do a little more measurement of the mast to make sure and then see if I can get a look at some used sails locally. I usually have a reef since the winds are fairly steady on the Bay ... not too worried about a minor loss of sail area. Geoff

you can use any sail

As long as the dimensions are close, it just depends on how much modification you are willing to pay for. At some popint it becomes more cost efficient to just have a new one made.

bolt rope vs. slugs

If you try to go with the bolt rope vs. slugs keep in mind that dropping the main won't be quick and easy, and when you do drop it you have a significant mess to deal with as you won't be flaking it on the boom very easily.

Also Capri 22 Main?

I'm trying to make the boat easier to sail, so bolt rope could be a step backwards, as you mention. I also noticed the Catalina Capri 22 Main is close in size although probably harder to find. Geoff
