Wow this weekend it was around 100 degrees at Rogersville and we didn't even go to the boat. We went scuba diving instead. Even scuba diving the water temperature was in the 90s near the surface. We just dove without wetsuits and stayed above the cold water but down in the cooler water. Lake diving is relatively boring but the lake is close to home. Even diving it was hot getting the stuff ready and getting into the water. We saw that even the stinkpotters were mostly anchored with the people in the water floating beside the boats. Are you sailing in this heat??? Do you anchor out?? If not sailing what are you doing during the dog days of summer??? Today in Birmingham the heat index is supposed to be 105!!!!!!!! We are really looking forward to late september and October when the days are warm and the nights are cool!!!

TOO HOT!!!

We didn't even go to the boat this weekend because of the heat. Just spoke to a friend who did and he said the only way they survived was jumping off the boat periodically to cool off. It was in the mid 90's here this weekend don't know what the index was but surely close to 100. Supposed to get really hot here this week. Like you looking forward to Sept. & Oct.

still sailing

Our heat index peaks at 105 today. I was at the boat this morning at 7:30 a.m. and put on my last coat of varnish on the teak while it was still cool out. During the week we are busy with school now and work schedules but the weekends are for sailing hot or not. Cold beer and dolphins make it all better:) B/Seadance

We are having a blast! Great wind 10-25 MPH every day. Who could ask for more.

It was almost hot in eastern Maine

It was hot at the mooring but cool "outside", as long as the wind was off the water. Caught a lobster pot and had to get in the water to clear the prop. On the incoming tide water temp wasn't to bad.

weather

Went sailing last weekend, both days in Long Beach, California. The temp was in the high 70's with overcast until the afternoon. Moderate winds of 6-8 knots, very little seas. All-in-all good but not great sailing. Looked for whales but saw none off Palos Verdes. Hasn't rained fome many months and no prospect for rain or storms this or next months. Ah, Southern California sailing. Novelman

Hot 'Lanta

Saturday at Lake Lanier it was about 96 degrees and the wind decreased from "light and variable" to non-existant. We were going to stay overnight but after motoring around for a half hour or and laying dead in the water for another half hour, we gave up and went home. Typical August weather for this area. I should have known better but I'm an incurable optimist when it comes to sailing.

Wow to be retired!!!

Wow I'd like to be retired so I could sail north and keep in the 70-80 temperature zone. Maybe next year. But probably be retired in September 2008 and head south for the winter then up the east coast. Maybe Chesapeake by June and on north to stay cool until August then start back south. OOPS I'm daydreaming at work again. Back to work!!!

So, let's see. I got 5 -maybe 6 months of sailing season and the rest is too cold. There's no such thing as too hot!!!

The Great Flood!

We are still waiting for the water to go back down. We are still without power and water on the docks. Its a dingy ride to get to the docks where your boat is. About 10 more feet and we will be back to where it is suppose to be. And the temp is around 100 with high humidity.

John are there alligators in Lake Lanier??

I looked at the Georgia website and they said that there are potentially alligators in most bodies of water in GA except for the mountains. We saw a lot of gators at Okeefenokee and all up the east coast. Supposedly some are all the way to Atlanta. Just curious as to where the gators stop. We were really surprised to find out that there are gators on Wheeler lake and apparently at least one was on Wilson lake. A lady told me that her dad has seen gators in the river almost up to Gadsden AL. Not directly sailing related but might affect swimming at night off the sailboat. John from Ohio :: We sail all year round on Wheeler lake..at least some of us. Even in winter it is usually very pleasant except immediately after a cold front passes through the area. Of course we can't swim from October until March.

Not too hot

It's never too hot. Those of you who are waiting for some other weather are going to be unhappy a good part of the time. If you are looking forward to September and October, I have to guess that you also like April and May, which are similar. That means that you are satisfied 4 out of 12 months. Life is short - get out there. I couldn't go on Saturday because I was showing in-laws around DC for the umpteenth time, but I got about two hours of sailing in on Sunday before the wind died. It was hot, but there just aren't that many days.

The past week

has produced some temps in the high 90's around the mid-Chesapeake Bay area. Fortunately, there has been enough wind to get the boat up to near hull speeds, too. I've found that with my bimini up and enough wind to move the boat smartly, it is quite comfortable on the water. Anchoring out overnight can be "iffy" however. I generally rig up a Wind Scoop and that does a decent job of keeping things comfortable below -- if there is a breeze. When the wind dies in the evening, it really gets uncomfortable below even with a number of fans going. But I'd rather be on the boat than in traffic on the highway or stuck in some office....

Near 98 yesterday

Got to the boat early. Wind was up and continued to build throughout the morning into the late afternoon. Tucked one reef in the main and sailed under the 110. Awesome day sailing. The waves gained momentum all day. Lake is a north / south orientation and shallow. Occasional 3 to 3 1/2' breaking rollers. The frequent spray over the bow and coming was a nice benefit on a very hot day. Dropped the hook about 3 p.m. took a quick dip to cool off. Had a great run back to the harbor. Never too hot to sail if there's wind.

I feel your pain MoonSailor but we took some . .

friends out yesterday afternoon. Left the dock at ~ 3:30 and had a decent sail (wind 4-6 k) until 7 when the wind just totally quit. There was some overcast times that helped and we have a new bimini from this site recently installed that helped too. Not too bad for this time of year.

John, when the sheet winches burn your fingers

it is too hot! Sailing in this weather is like sitting in a car in a parking lot. No shade and no wind. :(

I agree that it isn't too hot if there is wind

The wind forcast was light and varible. If there had been around 10 kts forcast we would have went sailing. Down on the coast we went out in the heat because almost always there was an ocean breeze at night and with the scoop it was comfortable. Life is too short to miss too many days of sailing.

Sailed on Saturday in the high seventies, sunshine, 12 knots of wind, blue sky, blue water, pretty much perfect. I love So. Cal.

Moonsailer there have been gator captures

in and around golf course water hazards in Clemson, S.C. Now, as Clemson is on Lake Hartwell and that lake shares shoreline with Georgia, gators could be considered to be in Ga. waters that far north. Steve
