It's the size of the cockpit that counts!

Thanks all for the helpful comments. I hadn't considered all the design considerations that would go into the layout of cockpit/cabin. Sounds like our cockpit is pretty much standard for our size range. While we would like the cockpit to be a bit bigger, we wouldn't trade that for a smaller cabin.
And the extra size isn't really for the loads of friends who want to come sailing with us. We just like stretching out in the cockpit, enjoying a leisurely sail around the bay. We would just like a little more room so we can bring one of our golden retrievers with us once in a while.

You give up some room in the O'Day cockpit because of the bridgedeck and traveler configuration. Unfortunately I believe most of the O'Days had that same configuration. I just sold an S2 27 that seemed to have a longer-than-average cockpit for a boat that size, you might want to look at those if you are thinking about switching.

Hunter made an oval cockpit for a few years it is very roomy on the 31 and 32 foot models.
