I just got my Official PHRF Rating from BC Sailing, and it's 254. That puts me slower than a Cal 25, slower than a Columbia 26, and, yes, slower than a Mac 26!

(BTW: Base rating for a Crown 28 is 218 - same as a Catalina 27 here)

So you can start taking your pot-shots now...

They make him carry all the beer for the post race party. Actually you should be happy with that rating. You should kick butt if the base is 218. What did they give you all the points for?

(consults the Official Document...) Ok, I get +6 for a smaller jib, +12 for a smaller (cruising) spinnaker, +12 for a 3-blade fixed prop, and +6 for no spinnaker pole.

I am amazed at the spinnaker rating: it's only -3 from no spinnaker at all - and I KNOW I go at least 1/2 knot faster with spinnaker than without.

But we'll see... the first race I'm entering is the Jack&Jill Race on Apr 24/25. I will have to remove the several hundred lbs of cruising gear i have aboard, and scrape/n/paint the hull...

Base rating for a Tartan 27' here in NY is 234 so we get +3 fixed 2 blade prop and +3 for RF genny so we race at 240. A rating of 254 for us would put us a few spots ahead in corrected time but we race non-spin for now.
Have fun.

The spin think always drives me NUTS on LIS with the J24 i get 174 or 174:bang:

On the 35' (117) if we want a new rudder we would have to take a 12 second hit

I have a friend who sails a Seafarer 22 and, I believe, he's a 270 or so. He takes home a lot of silver. He's a great sailor, for one, and he practices. But being in the back has some advantages. For one, you can see what worked and what didn't with the boats ahead. We always say - if you can see him, he's beating you!

Tommays: I think they're saying they want you to sail in the spinnaker class. In our races we would probably let a J24 sail cruising with a 194 - but I think that's a bit unfair to heavier cruiser/racers.

You might want to post this on the Slow Boat Forum, where all the people with really slow boats meet and discuss coming in last, getting passed, always sailing in dirty air or being blanketed.

Hi druid,
Shouldn't you be happy to have a slower rating but be able to sail fast?
ps.. I sent you some info on the "bc" forum.

Your rating guy is smoking something. Don't complain. You will have other sailors wondering how you got that rating when you win all those races.

Enter the port to port races. If winds give you a reach you will kick butt.

For many years, BC had a rep for generous ratings. So bad that other reigions did not use their numbers. Maybe they still deserve that rep.
