It's the time of the year for the winter boat shows. Will you be going to one or more? What are you looking for when you go to a boat show? Are you in the market for a new boat? Or do you just like to keep up with the latest designs and innovations? Maybe you're interested in an electronics upgrade and want to see the new stuff being offered? Are the seminars and speakers the primary draw? Or if you're in a part of the world where sailing isn't possible during the winter, are you looking for a fix of something nautical? Share your show thoughts here then vote in Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

Just went to NY City boat show....

(or should I say motorboat show.....lol)....But they did have 1 sailboat there.....drumroll please....the MacGregor.....(sailboat or is it a motorboat....whatever...lol)...no seminars at all to speak of, but its good for getting boat show deals on gadgets and talking to the electronic manufactures....but nothing else nautical...:) Definitely planning on attending Sail Expo in AC later this month....much better show, very good seminars, sailing gadgets, merchandising booths, etc

goin' to Cleveland next week

for my annual walk-around. It's fun to check out all the new boats (that I'll never be able to afford...) and look for a bargain here and there. This season I have two specific upgrades in mind- a bimini and/or a tiller pilot. Most likely one or the other. I'll drag home all the literature I can find and it'll probably remain in the boat show bag until I clean out the boat room next season while moving all the boat stuff back down to the boat. The main thing is to be there and realize that the season is right around the corner.

ny boat show

they did have the hunter 35.6 and I love it ,also had two 33 7 36 beneteau also very nice boats , but most inportant were the electronic manufactors and great show deals on equipment , me and a freind got good prices on chartplotters much cheaper than any other places, plus $200 on the tax from cosumer electronics in nj, it was worth the trip round trip LIRR plus show tickets all for $32, for two of us a lot of great stuff, and info.

It;s just not the same.

When I was a little boy (I'm 58) my dad used to take me to the boat shows at the Kingsbridge Armory in The Bronx, NY. This was before the advent of plastic boats, and each of the display boats, big and small, was a nautical work of art, finished like fine furniture, but unlike furniture, curved and contoured and shaped so beautifully. When they were suddenly and dramatically replaced by plastic boats, I lost interest in boat shows. If this makes me an old grump, so be it. It's just not the same.

Detroit Boat Show

Want to go to a show that only shows stink-pots? Detroit Boat Show was big. All motor boats. One sailfish stuck in the corner, that's it. What a bumber...

Planning PVD Saturday

I'm planning on going to the Providence show on Saturday. Although it is primarily a Powerboat show, I'm interested in a chartplotter purchase this year and a couple of the seminars that are being offerred.

Cleveland to see H356.

Cleveland show is a good one(link below). Besides, they plan to raze the IX center, then what?

See you there Paul...

The Providence journal had a special section on the boat show yesterday. It said that there will be a 36' and a 32' Hunter there. It does give me a slight winter fix, but there's nothing like the real thing!!

SHOW ME

1/7/02 I love to go to the shows, but, with no possibility of buying anything I have skipped many years. I worked in Florida for several years and the Miami show was great because of the large in the water portion of the show. Atlantic city was fun because of the seminars and demos. Of course, Annapolis is great because it is... Annapolis. NY is mostly power, but interesting. Some of the smaller local shows are good, too. There is a show in Norwalk that is nearby that I like. Portland Boat Show

Sorry to say it sucked. Not surprising, since most of the boating industry in town revolves around power boats. As usual, very little for sailors but also very few "goodies". You know, the little stuff that you can buy for under $20 - no baggage, food vacuumers, storage containers, etc. The Portland Boat Show is only good if you're planning on actually buying a boat, not if you already have one. New Orleans

I am planning to attend the New Orleans Boat Show in February. It too is mostly powerboats but they are showing the two new Beneteau's I was fortunate enough to get a sneek preview of both boats. I know the dealier in New Orleans and he invited me over for a look. Both are very nice. I think I like the 36 best of the two.

Seattle is Not As Good Anymore

The Seattle Kingdome (oops, Stadium Expedition Center; they tore down the multi-million dollar Kingdome before the loan was paid off!) has become a powerboat show. In the early 80s there were lots of sailboats but there are practically none there anymore. Even many of the exhibits that used to be on the upper level that catered more to sail have moved out to the Boats Afloat Show at Lake Union. Unfortunately it's usually cold, wet, and sometimes wind there, and the parking is really bad. And - the Boats Afloat show raised their entry fee to $10! It used to be free then they gradually (rapidly) raised their entry fee. We're seriously looking for something in the 40 and up range but it will be used so these one can see anytime of the year. Also, the boat show used boats seem to be priced above market. I would really like to boycott both shows this year but I know my wife likes the indoor show so we'll see. I know she'd like a computer charting program for a laptop. On the plus side I have to admit the boat show does provide a break from the winter blas.

Toronto B.S....next week

The sail side of the show has grown again as free trade and demand has brought the "Big Boys" to Canada. Catalina, Hunter, Jeanneau, and Beneteau are their now. Tartan also is represented since they bought the C

Boston in Feb.

I'll be attending the Boston Boat show at the Bay Side Expo in February. Not looking for a new boat, but it is a nice mid winter boating activity, and you can look over the new gear and pickup some deals. The MacGregor Owners Association of New England (MOANE) has a meeting at the nearby Savin Hill Yacht Club over lunch, then we migrate to the Bay Side Expo show for the afternoon. Anyone interested in MOANE (open to all trailer sailors -- several members own Hunters or other brands -- can contact me at twarneke@mediaone.net for more info. Fair winds... Tom

rain, rain go away, I want to sail my little O'day

As the proud owners of 5 boats with one on the way, we are interested in everything from electronics to ground tackle. I miss the good 'ol days when the Long Beach show was the best in the US and we just could hardly wait for it. Seattle does its' best but the show is mostly for Stink..uh, power boats. We don't sail all year here but we shiver in our rain-wet foulies and dream of tropical breezes and the sound of the starting horn for our race season. I can see thru the dripping trees, my little daysailer snug in her Cosco barn waiting for her Spring fixup to get her sailing again on the Sound. She was a Pound-Puppy and required a lot of work. But she is sitting up and taking nourishment and we will sail her this year! Those of you in warmer climates better get out there and SAIL for those of us who cannot. Happy 2002.

Strictly Sailing

Getting excited to go to our first all sail boat show in Chicago on Jan 31. Being so new to sailing ( 1-1/2 years ) am curious to look at potential investments for our current boat and to learn of possible future investments. That is if you can call a boat an investment. Entertaining yes. Was going to go to Miami show later in Feb but that one also had power boats and I just as soon stay clear. Hope to maybe see some of you there.

London - Earls Court

I have just been to the London Boat Show. As always a boating extravaganza in limited space. V interested in the new Hunter 466. Bought an Autoprop for my Hunter 43, as the existing 2 blade does not do justice to the engine. Any comments out there? Enjoy your show, wherever it is!

No sailing boat shows in my town!

All the boat shows I've been to around here are nothing but row after row of center console powerboats. This is a great sailing area, and there are lots of sailboats, but very little is geared for us.
