Friday night I jump in the family mini van to shop for the weekend on the boat and get 3 blocks away and the oil light comes on and lots of noise and knocking ....plenty of oil so it looks like an oil pump went.
Saturday were rafted with some friends very near Fire Island inlet and the boat we were rafted to is leaving for the night so I gotta drop the hook, press the windlass down button and click click thats it nothing press the up button and click click so I put my hand under the motor and can feel the clicks there so were getting electric to that point......OK cause were in an area that has a lot of current I'm not to crazy at this point to be deploying the spare anchor when I have other options for a safe night with friends, wife and two of my young children on board one being an infant so we head toward an area in the bay with a little less water, current and wind to settle down for the night
The current in Fire Island channel is pretty strong so were motor sailing when all of a sudden I hear this strange noise coming from the stern.....holy s...t no water from the exhaust  ,I look at the temp gauge and its up there so I shut the engine down and focus on sailing this channel....why didn't the after market raw water alarm go off I'm thinking , so we sail for a hours back to the marina and call it a day.
Sunday I wake up and check the sea strainer and all looks good so next I pull open the raw water pump which is a real pain in the ass to get to on my boat and the impeller is wiped out....now I just replaced it last month and put maybe 3 hours on it and there's only 4 piece's out of 6 in the pump housing.....great where'd the other 2 go......found them in the oil cooler and got them out by using the garden house at the other side while my 7 year old daughter held the output host in a bucket and looked for the pieces, we got them both now I'm puzzled why this impeller failed so I think about the water stain at the seal area I noticed when I did changed the impeller and said to myself "self you should keep an eye on this" truth be told this pump is in a spot that fiberglass covers that are screwed on prevent me from really keeping and eye on it and when I looked at the stain this time it looked like there was more so now I have now choice but to spring for a whole new pump....ouch it was a lot of $$$ but I'm heading offshore in a few weeks so I'm glad it happened now and I'll have the old pump rebuilt and stash it for a spare.
anyone have this experience with raw water pumps and seals
So I have to buy a new car, probably a new windlass cause the motor looks like a pile of rust

Just maybe

Mr. Murphy has moved away from my neighborhood. While I really hate wish him off on anyone, would sure be glad if he moved on. Sorry to hear about your problems. But things seem to happen in threes, so maybe your done for a while.

I had a time when impellers would only last 20 hours or less. After three replacements I was thinking that I had a lot of bad impellers.

The final solution was not bad impellers but rather a bad bearing in the pump that allowed the shaft to have a very small amount of side-to-side play. I was going to do a total rebuild, but the pump was superseded by a newer design so I ended up replacing the entire pump.

So why didn't the after-market flow alarm go off?

I've had a few weekends like that, but then people that know my family all agree that Murphy had OUR last name before he changed it in hopes of better luck!

I have not looked into that yet, I did check that to see if there was 12 volt power and that was present so a phone call later to the mfg. to see how I trouble shoot this system

How many have them and are they worth it?????

So my question is..... What is the consensus on this board as to aftermarket temp alarms and their usefullness and reliability. Seems foolish to purchase one and also become a contortionist to install if it aint gonna work when needed. On the other hand it might just have been a fluke and the work of that SOB Murphy. Cause when it comes to luck at least I have bad luck instead of no luck at all.
Oh yeah almost forgot, those that do have them.... what do you have????

on my ericson i have , from yanmar, a set of oil, water temp and alt alarms --they usually function well--i dont know about the overheat one as i find my engine runs at less than 130 even after hours of use...but the alarm is a loud buzzing --as opposed to the high pitched screaming one...broke an alt belt one day....lol...
