No, we're not talking about your winches. While the Academy Awards have many thinking about movies, what's your favorite sailing film? In case you're having trouble remembering them all, there's a great recap of nautical films here: http://www.users.qwest.net/~ghawkins1/movies1.htm What's your choice, and why? And don't forget to vote in the Quick Quiz on the the home page.

Wow! What choice to make!!!

Wow, talk about a tough choice to make! I could really vote for all of them for differant reasons. Of course for comedy (sailing movie or otherwise) Capt. ron takes the cake. That one is special to me in that most of it was filmed in Puerto Rico (more specifically Puerto Del Ray marina in Fajardo)where I spent a season as a live aboard charter skipper, so I can relate to it pretty well. For an action flic, I choose Master and Commander. I'm not sure why, just a personal preference over White Squall. Alhtough White Squall is no slouch. Wind was also a great movie, but I didn't think it had as much "mass appeal" as the others since it dealt with racing, and there really aren't that many of us who race. I've got to admit seeing those International 14s made me nostalgic for my dinghy days. Talk about a pure racing machine. if you sneeze in the wrong direction you're in the drink! Perhaps another movie worth putting into contention is Dove. It may be dated and bit "made for tv" but it's a great story. Although I thought the book was better.

More Oscar catagories needed

Shouldn't have to select one - Oscars presented variety of catagories... Best comedy: Captain Ron Best on-the-water filming and racing: Wind (esp. dinghy racing) Best adaptation of a good book: Master & Commander

Master and Commander

Hands down, Master and Commander, followed by the BBC Horatio Hornblower series, because I think they depict the greatest of the age of sail, the Napoleonic wars. I've heard a rumor that a sequel to Master and Commander is in the works, I only hope it's true. Although it's not really about sailing other than one short sequence of the rescue of the sailboat crew, The Perfect Storm is a great sea movie too. I'd really like to see someone make a movie or documentary about the Vendee Globe, especially Ellen Macarthur. Can you imagine a 24 year old, 5'2" young lady singlehanding an open 60 around the world to finish 2nd in that race? If you're not familiar with her, then Google her or go to youtube and type in her name.

Summer Rental

I liked "Summer Rental" with the late John Candy. Lots of sailing in general and a RACE!

No Question

White Squall, for many reasons. The coming of age for young men, the contest between peers, and the last look between husband and wife. Maybe these are the reason people didn't like the movie, too close to home, eh.

Dead calm?

Whenever I go cruising on the Chessy I always carry Capt. Ron, Dead Calm, U-571 and The Enemy Below. The last two not necessarily Sailing flicks, just an ex-submariner wanting to remember the old Navy days.

Here's Mine.

Captain Ron for sure. I also like Master and Commander. However, one that really keeps me watching on the edge of my seat is "Dead Calm." Not one that you want the Admiral to see, but what a great flick. Oh.. and Pirates of the Caribbean is a hoot. Broke Sailor....you beat me by one minute. ;-) BTW: Not to put you on the spot, buy my Dad was a sonar man on an old diesel sub during the Korean war.

WIND!

I am constantly looking for good sailing movies. There doesn't seem to be that many. Master and Commander, Wind, Capt. Ron, etc. But the only movie that I know of that is dedicated to the art of sailing boats is Wind. It is by far my favorite because it depicts sailing as we know it in modern day sailing as exciting, as well as the wonder of the wind and the sea and comes closer to showing that true love of the wind in the sails that we all know. I wish someone would make a movie about some of the awesome sailing races such as the Volvo, wiich are full of fascinating people and hair raising adventure as well as the drama and tragedy of sailors actually dying for the love of our sport.

Gotta Agree with Alan

Gotta say that all of them are. They all have merits on their own. Dead Calm is pretty good, too.

Split Decision

There really are quite a few to choose from, however: -hubby loves 'Wind' - cheesy story but great sailing scenes -I love 'Captain Ron' - isn't that the quintessential dream - pick up and just go and never come back Do either of the 'Pirates of the Carribean' qualify as sailing movies???

Riddle of the Sands

This movie is a great one for great sailing scenes, below-deck life, and also wonderful plot on an intriguing aspect of preparations for WWI. I can't comment on historical accuracy. If you haven't seen it, check it out. It is an oldie, but definitely worth watching.

The list is too much fun

Hey, here's another, although not my fav. Tom Hanks finally sailed his porta john(after 4yrs!!) in Castaway(WILLLLSSONNN;)) Egads. We just watched the Guardians, about the USCG. While not a sailing flick, it makes us appriciate these brave guys and gals all the more. Our top 3: Cptn Ron was a definate hoot, Cut throat island was fun, white squall was interesting. I still want to go on an extended cruise with kelli so I'm avoiding her seeing dead calm(too skeery). Maybe somebody can recommend a couple tropical cruisin' type films, or a doct on sailors like Joshua Slocum. Michael and kelli

Dead Calm paradox ...

I think the movie had too many weaknesses to be named as a good movie, yet I can still watch it over and over for some reason that I can't explain. *o First of all, the premiss is all wrong. What sailors go out into the ocean simply to float around like they were doing. They made it clear in the beginning that they were going to float around in their boat in the middle of the sea until Nicole got over her dispair! It wasn't as if they were stuck out there simply because they were becalmed ... they were intentionally going nowhere. I mean, who does THAT???? Then, there was the issue of the lack of sailing in the movie. There was one stirring scene where Nicole had to raise sails and sail the boat in a squall and I thought the scene was great, but overall the movie was a total disappointment from the lack of enough actual SAILING! TOO MUCH DEAD CALM! There was nothing in the way of scenery and they could have shot the movie in a swimming pool for all the interest the sea conditions presented. Then there was Billy Zane who was way more annoying than he was threatening. I mean what an absolute wimp he was. I was annoyed (and still am everytime I watch the move ;)) that Nicole was not able to dispose of him almost immediately upon learning about what a flake he was. The movie was supposed to be about how strong and resourceful that she and her husband were, yet we had to suffer with this flake trashing a nice boat throughout the movie because of her lame attempts to subdue him when she could have just hit him over the head and thrown him overboard. HOW ANNOYING! Sam Neill was great in the movie and the way he was dealing with all of the issues on board the schooner was really interesting. They needed a more plausible story, a more threatening antagonist, and much more sailing! The Bounty ... what a great movie (the one with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson) ... can't watch it too often. Captain Ron ... I haven't seen the whole movie yet, only caught a piece of it on TV once ... going to get it on Net Flix soon. It seems to be universally acknowledged as a great comedy, and this many people CAN'T BE WRONG! :) They didn't list "The Weight of Water" with Sean Penn. I liked this movie a lot even though I don't care for Sean Penn. Somebody in this forum suggested this movie and I am glad he did! The one thing I didn't like about the movie was that Sean and his wife (in the movie) chain smoke throughout the movie which really detracts from the characters to me (and my wife). We have this thing about chain smoking ... it makes the characters entirely unappealing and we have no sympathy for them as a result. Doesn't anybody notice how close to death Sean looks in real life because of his filthy smoking habit even though he is a young guy yet? Well, those are my reviews! If you don't agree with them, then you can write your own! ;)
