Well I've been busy working on my trailer! Here is what you need. The trailer tongue telescopes from the frame work. I bought this trailer used and in terrible shape. I grinded/sanded and primed with rust primer and now I'm good to go! Can't help with retrofitting existing trailer but this is the way to go!

That's quite an undertaking. I like the idea of the telescopic tongue. That's the one thing that I miss on my trailer. I'm sure that when it's completed, it will work nice for you, and you'll have the satisfaction in knowing that you reclaimed this old trailer, and brought it back to life again.
