[FONT=&quot]While working on my mast steaming light today, Murphy decided to pay me a visit. During his/her visit, the lens on my Perko 1331 decided to go swimming. It really was a beautiful site, double somersault with three half twists and a splash-less entry. Then I cried as I watched it go straight to the bottom. :eek::cussing::cry:

If the water was so clear that the lens could be seen going straight to the bottom, what is needed would be mask, fins, and snorkle to retrieve it! Deep breath and dive to the bottom.

I feel the pain though. My whole mission in life is staying ABOVE the tension surface line. Below is unacceptable, even two feet..


(You know, for what it's worth....I along with every boater hate losing things to the drink. I try and look at it as a sacrifice to the sea, and maybe Poseidon will leave my chainplates alone).

Am I the only one who buys 2 sets of nuts and bolts, screws when I buy parts at the hardware store. Do you have a whole bunch "extra" nuts bolts and screws in your tool box that didn't get sacrificed to the sea gods? Of course the extras are never the ones you need for the next project. Strange isn't it?

Until you throw them away.

This last weekend, I removed a Rule bilge pump, to be replaced by the correct remote-style pump. I didn't need the Rule, and it was really old anyway so I tossed it in a marina trash can, along with a dormant length of hose that had been routed into the bilge from a separate application. Didn't need the hose, and it was dirty anyway.

Went back to the boat, monkeyed around a bit, and realized I could put a bilge pump in the shower sump as a backup high capacity emergency pump\ shower sump pump. (see other recent post, "deep keel bilge pump"). All I needed was a BILGE PUMP...now where would I get one of those? Mad dash back to the trash can, rummage rummage rummage (butt sticking out of can) rummage rummage....found it.

Then, while installing it into the shower sump, realized I needed a couple of short lengths of HOSE.....now where would I get those? Mad dash back to the trash can, rummage rummage rummage (butt sticking out of can) rummage rummage....found it.

Had I stored those items in the lazarette, they would have been there when the boat finally went to the salvage yard many years from now.

I think next time I will tie a bib between me and the mast so anything I drop will be caught. Hmmm... I can make one, call it a Marine Bib and charge $75 for it. Nice...

Murphy's best buddy is "I didn't see it coming". Before every job just take a couple of moments to think of things that could go wrong and develop solutions to stop or mitigate the consequences. "I didn't see it coming " is mighty crafty and it may not be possible to be 100% covered but just anticipating and acting on the most likely occurrences will tend to keep Mr. Murphy away.
