...'Hunter Racing' is a dirty word. Not many people posting their racing questions and comments. Maybe it should be renamed 'Hunter Better Sailing' instead. There's an old adage that says..... two sailboats in the water constitute a race. I find it impossible to go sailing and ignore the sail trim. It bothers me no end to see the genoa leech luffing or the mainsail telltales hiding behind the leech. Optimizing sail trim is how to sail. Leaving sail trim untouched is like driving your car on a sunny day with the windshield wipers running. Sailing your boat against others on a course and doing a better job of trimming or picking the favored side to be on gives me great satisfaction. In last Wed night’s race, we got a poor start and sailing against an Olson 30 and J-120 I thought we were toast. We persisted, in very lite air, where the Olson typically has a big advantage. Slowly we moved in and finally passed both of the leaders. Good crew work, sail trim, and picking the favored side all worked to give us the win. The whole crew was elated to finish in first after our terrible start, and against a J-120 with a PHRF of 51,..WOW!!! Well, dirty word or not, it was a very satisfying evening.

Hunters can race! We just finished a couple of larger races in the last few weeks. The Southern Bay Leukemia cup was held July 10 and we were the only Hunter racing PHRF, and finished in second place again this year. There wer several Hunters in the Cruising class with a 35.5 catching a third place finish. We also raced Screwpile last week, wher we were the only Hunter registered out of 174 boats. Our finish was 6th place overall after 3 days of racing in winds of 0-8 knots. Lets get some more Hunters out there to the line!!

I have......

.....a Legend 35.5 with ALL the bells and whistles. Custom deep draft keel, tappered spectra halyards, Kevlar rags, 8 spinnakers, jumper strut, race bottom and feathering Max prop just to name a few of the upgrades. We do pretty well against boats with phrf's in the 100-120 range. Every once in a while we manage to rip off a win against a boat with a double digit rating. Have beaten a Swan56, Evelyn42, and now the J120. These guys rate in the 35 to 55 range. Winning in that crowd is no easy task, but it sure feels at the club afterwards.

Impressive, Alan.

Bob Willett in Little Rock has a 40.5 equipped in a very similar way. But, he doesn't hang out in the site much. Also, as is yours, a very impressive boat from a performance orientation. Congrads, and keep bringing home silver! Rick D.

Hunter's and racing

Not sure why the Hunter fleet is not doing more racing. I find that in our regular regatta's we have about 4 racing a 27,28.5,31 and a 34. We all do well when the boats are sailed well. I also see Catalina's,Beneteau's, and Tartans racing. In our class when we sail well we are on top more then we are on bottom. THe boats from the 80's seem to be some of the best cruiser/racer boats. Not sure how well the current crop of Hunter boats does. I just finished the MAC Race and ther were a fair amount of Catalina's,Tartan's, & Beneteau's doing the but only a few Hunter's. Not sure why but we are looking into adding our boat to the fleet next year. Cliff
