Here is a story that reminds me of the 6 P's I learned in scouts.

Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance

I'm also reminded of the famous words of Queen Victoria "We are not amused"
I'm guessing that's what the Coast Guard captain was saying too.

Make sure you have working radios and backups. These guys and gal were lucky........ this time.

How about the guy a couple years back that took off from Newport Beach to go to Avalon in a 27 foot sloop with no radio or food, water, or much of anything else. Lost his mast in the channel and was found 2 months later off the coast of Peru. living off gulls he caught and water from rain. If awards for sheer luck and stupidity were given out this one wins both. I seem to recall the motto "BE PREPARED".

That's what they officially taught us. The 6 P's were said around the campfire much later in the evening. It has stuck with me ever since and mostly keeps me out of trouble although I still manage to search hard enough to find some now and then.
