I've prided myself for 10 years in not losing my winch handle and today it happened. Anyone know where to get a winch handle for a barient 10 winch? Are all winch sockets the same size? Where's a good place to find one? ebay?

Thanks for your help!

Bobby,
Check out these two sites.

http://www.newportnautical.com/servlet/StoreFront I've never been to the Wickford RI store, but I've been to the one in Newport RI, and they have a cellar full of consignment sailboat parts. I couldn't believe how much they want for new winch handles in the Defender Marine site. You may want to check with Rudy. He may have these handles. He bought all the hardware from Alden Yachts, just last year.

I wonder if bonding on one of those inflatable key holder that you see at the WM counter would work. The bag looks like it would float a pretty good load.

To tell you the truth Frank, I've only used my handle a few times. It just sits in my cabin most of the time. I have a Barlow Winch on my mast for pulling up halyards, but I usually take about three turns of my halyard on it, and sweat it up by hand. I do the same on my Gennie winches. I carry a Gerber Multi-Plier tool on me everywhere I go, and I use that more than any tool I've ever had. Last week I lost it in a super market parking lot, or somewhere else, and it gave me a sick feeling. Wal-Mart no longer carries that certain style tool so I had to order it the other day from a place in Eau Claire WI. I know how he feels. I hate to lose something.

We lost one two

We replaced ours with a Lewmar self locking. It fit our Barient 10P winches. I believe they are all standard size.

That's why I don't use mine as often as I could I'm afraid of losing it over the edge. Mine is an old winch and the handles are no longer available. I'm using my back up because the original is lost somewhere on the boat.

First, all the winches I have used on smaller sailboats are the same size, including metic boats. Maybe the bigger boats have bigger handles, but not the boats that I am used to sailing.

Second, they make and sell floating winch handles. I have one. Look at the West catolog.

And Joe, use a lanyard. Next time you go to a boat show, stop at one of those booths that give away the key lanyards. Works for keys and your all purpose tool that usually has a security attachment ring or loop. If you can't wait to go to a boat show, make one, nylon cord works. Or go to any key shop and get one like the truckers use. Could that be why they sell those fancy chains. Those things usually clip to a belt or can loop around a belt or belt loop. You may even want a second one for your car keys. If you get one long enough you can leave it attached to the car keys while driving and not lock your car keys in your car. Ever hear of someone locking their keys in their car?

Joe, now you have a reason to go to the Annapolis Boat Show next October. Tell your wife you want to see lanyards.

Hi Ed,
Good advise and I'm going to take it. What happened was, my belt came un-done and the case with the tool slipped right off it. I had no idea that I lost that tool, until I found out as I was walking in the parking lot, I could see my shadow along with my belt swinging from side to side. I looked for the tool in the parking lot and couldn't find it. I may have lost it in another city that I had just visited. I thought about making a lanyard after that, but the poor horse got burned in the fire beyond recognition. Gee I wish that I could go to the Annapolis Boat Show. I have a friend who has gone to that one, and also the one in New York. I've always wanted to see the "Skimmer 25" up close. I'm afraid that going on long trips without Penelope is out of the question. Years ago, I went to the three boat shows in Boston, the Providence RI Boat Show, the Newport RI Boat Show, and the North American Small Boat Shows every year. I bought a new sailboat in the Newport RI. NASBS, which was sponsored by Small Boat Journal Magazine, and my O'Day 222 was bought at the Boston Expo Center Boat Show. I've owned three new sailboats through the years, and my O'Day 222 has been at the top of the list. I think I'll quit while I'm still ahead.
Regards,
Joe

That is why they make dog carriers. Just plan in advance for motels that accept pets. There are some. If you have not been to Annapolis, you just have not been to a boat show.

No real sailboater has not been to Annapolis. Just fact.

Perhaps I'll get there some day, Ed. I agree with you though. The Annapolis Boat Show is--The show. I failed to mention that Penny gets car sick on long trips. I have a boy hood friend named Tom Moody who lives in Camden SC. He's been after me for years to go down there and do some deer hunting with him, and I haven't made the trip yet. Tom's uncle Ralph was famous in car racing down there.
