It actually hit a rock. I was on the north side of West Island (for those who know the area) Luckily I was traveling at no more than 3 Knts, however my lead keel shook the whole boat (25' Hunter). I checked the bilge but no sign of leaking. I did do some substantial keel work this year including fairing, 5200 and fiberglass. Anyone had a similar experience, what was the damage? Any suggestions short of hauling the boat out? All constructive criticism appreciated.

Keel Repair

Break out the West System with filler. Start early in the off season so you can take your time. Plan on filling, sanding, filling and sanding. Use long boards for sanding to avoid high spots. Put some food coloring in acetone and "paint" it on the keel between sanding because it will point out the low sponts. Paint Interlux 2000e and then finish with your bottom paint. If the boat can be hung in the sling, you will be able to fill and fair the bottom of the keel as well because while in the cradle, the bottom of the keel is out of touch.

Happened!

Happen'd ta me 3 clicks offa Montauk Point, hit a keel gaucher at about 7 knts, big piece hacked otta ma keel, no leaks, just watch da bilge and pray. Out here taday, hotta than grasshopper on a hot giddle!

Grounding in OZ

We had our first grounding in Whitsundays last year on a brand new Catalina 33. We hit a coral head at approx 3 knots and while it was scary there was no hull damage. I inspected the keel by diving immediatley and we noted two areas of keel damage. On the leading edge there was a bump or depression. On the trailing edge there was a 2-3 inch tear in the lead where I tried to horse the boat off in reverse. $300 in lead repairs was it. In retrospect it is important to go to neutral and pause to think your way out of it instead of doing what I did and panic to get off fast. My wife thought the tide was falling. Sounds like we were both lucky!

ghadrill -- There is a Catalina 33 out there ?

I didn't know Catalina made a 33 foot model. I went to their website and I didn't see one. Is there a link to it, I'm curious.. http://www.catalinayachts.com/
